With the beginning of the 2011 NHL All-Star Weekend hosted by the Carolina Hurricanes only a week away, the NHL released the details of the Honda NHL SuperSkills competitions that will take place on Sat. Jan. 29 at the RBC Center in Raleigh, NC. The six events feature the return of past competitions and the introduction of new and modified ones, and will involve the participation of the league’s top rookie scorer, Calder trophy contender, and hometown favorite Jeff Skinner. The inclusion of 12 rookies amongst a group of 42 NHL All-Star players who will participate throughout the weekend in SuperSkills and the All-Star Game competition should add momentum to the tide in the NHL’s wave of marketing and business operations that infuses youth and energy to promotion and production.
Skinner has home ice advantage
According to the latest online discussions, it is no surprise that supplies of All-Star game T-shirts with individual players’ names on them are going fast, particularly Skinner’s. After adding two more points (1G, 1A) in a 4-1 win over the New York Rangers on Thursday night, Skinner increased his overall lead in rookie scoring to 8 points over the next closest rookie, Logan Couture of the San Jose Sharks. Consider that when Skinner scores a goal, the Carolina Hurricanes (23-18-6) are 12-2-0, and when he scores a point, their record is 14-8-1. There is no doubt that when Skinner takes to the ice to participate in NHL SuperSkills, he will possess the advantage of his home ice surface and crowd to cheer him on.
Others may say that such an enviroment may provide more nervousness and anxiety to build up within him, but for those who haven’t watched Skinner closely this season, they will never see it – 39 points (17G, 22A) in 47 games thus far proves that.
Skills fun and previews
For those who are visual learners, the NHL did a great job in presenting video previews of the the six different skills events that Team Staal and Team Lidstrom will be competing against one another in. The NHL has provided full details and rules for each event and will help fans to understand what is going on as they watch their favorites go head to head in individual and team compeitions. Local fans will be hopeful that Jeff Skinner makes an impact at this year’s SuperSkills competition along with his fellow rookies to further establish their presence and place amongst their veteran All-Star peers.
