During the course of the year berry lovers purchase fresh fruits of all shape, sizes and types. Some of them are strawberries, blueberries, blackberries or raspberries. These fruits are enjoyed eaten as is and others are incorporated into various recipes. We have even sliced them into salads, placed them on plates with sandwiches, tossed them whole into bowls of cereals and made many delicious smoothies.
Berries of all types are very nutritious and good for you. They are packed with fiber, antioxidants and plenty of vitamins. These little joys are seasonal and best when picked fresh from your own gardens. For those in Winona who don’t grow their own the farmers market in Greenwood is the place to go once it opens in the spring. Of course most berries are available at the local SuperValu, Spain’s market as well as the Grocery Basket year round.
Most berries are packaged in small plastic baskets. These baskets are usually thrown away. They actually can be repurposed, reused and put to additional daily uses if they can’t be recycled. The first step after removing the berries is to wash these various size baskets with hot soapy water. Allow them to dry completely before they take on their next task.
Is your sock drawer a mess?
Place the plastic baskets in your sock drawer. Roll the socks like you normally do and place them into the baskets. Separate the socks by colors and the next time you want a particular color it will stand out. Not only that, that sock drawer that is always a mess will be neat as a pin. (Also, great to separate out panty hose or knee high stockings too.)
Is your desk cluttered?
Place a plastic berry basket on your desk at home or work. Stack all those post it note pads in them for easy access. Put one in a drawer to separate out rubber bands, binder clips, pens and pencils. They will be easily found and rummaging through an entire drawer to find that one needed item will be quick and easy.
Does your sink stink?
That smell might be coming from the sponge. If it isn’t squeezed out completely and left where air can dry it properly it may cause a smell around the sink area. Place a berry basket near the sink and keep your sponge inside. Or better yet, turn the basket over and place the sponge on top. The basket won’t rust and the sponge will get air from all sides, helping to eliminate that smell that sometimes occurs.
Do daughters have a messy dresser top?
If you have a daughter you will know right off that the tops of their dressers are covered with an assortment of what parents call a mess. Give them a few berry baskets. Let them decorate them or use them as is. One can hold hair clips, scrunchies, ribbons and bows. Another may be needed for lipstick, lip gloss or lip balms. Give them something to work with and less will be on the dresser just ready to fall to the floor.
