Enjoy the conclusion of the charming interview with Robbert van Bloemendaal of Travel Leaders Rowlett…
Andrea: What is your favorite memory of traveling with your wife?
Robbert: You know, sometimes in life you will have two or three occasions that you will sit back and you laugh and laugh and laugh. I have three situations like that, with her. We were in Cairns, which is up on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. We were in this hotel, and it had this landing outside it…like this kitchenette…a place where you could sit down and eat. There was a plant growing up on the wall, and I shouted, “Get the camera…quick, quick!” So the camera comes up to take the photo. There is this beautiful, blue butterfly on the wall. And, just when she took the picture, I went “whack” and killed it.
Andrea: What happened?!
Robbert: It was painted on the wall…we sat back and laughed and laughed.
Andrea: How fun!
Robbert: Another occasion, alright. We were, home (in Australia). We were in the ensuite. I took a hand towel, to wash my face with, and I pulled it up. It pulled over a plant we had. You know, the Australian Eucalyptus plant, they have sometimes as dried flower arrangements…very bushy. Anyway, I pulled the towel, and knocked it over. Dust went everywhere, and there was a fan going. The planted a hadn’t been cleaned or dusted in a year or two, and all this dust had accumulated all on the leaves. It was like there was a dust storm in the house. We just sat down there and laughed and laughed.
Andrea: Ha, ha, ha…
Robbert: Those are the things you can do when you have a good time in the relationship. I mean, that could have been a situation like, “What did you do that for (knock over the plant)!?”But, no, it was fun.
Andrea: That is wonderful.
Robbert: One morning, I go down stairs to let the dogs out, and I am sitting down to have a cup of coffee. She rushed out and says, “Hurry, Robert, come up stairs quick there is a rat!” It turns out it was a possum….must have sneaked in where I went outside, went upstairs, climbed on the bed and climbed through her hair, and scared her. She got up and chased it into the ensuite. I came up, found it, I covered the possum with a towel and threw it over the fence.
Andrea: Thank goodness, it wasn’t a mean one. Possums have the most teeth of any mammal.
Robbert: Yes, and thank goodness it wasn’t a rat or I would have had to kill it. Anyway, all in all we have had some great times.
Andrea: That’s all of the questions I have. I am very, very happy we were able to get together. This is a rare marriage…not something you get to hear about everyday.
Robbert: I have a plaque in my office…on the wall. It says, “I love my wife.”
Robbert: She didn’t buy it.
Andrea: Awwww! You did.
Robbert: Many people come in and say. “Oh! Your wife bought that for you, did she?” I say, no.
Andrea: That is wonderful. Thank you.
Robbert: Thank you.
