Abortion doctor charged with murder, allegedly killed live infants with scissors (DA audio)
A Philadelphia abortion doctor has been charged with eight counts of murder for the death of one woman who died as a result of a botched abortion and seven infants. Dr. Kermit Gosnell faces the seven additional murder charges for allegedly killing infants who were born alive by cutting into the backs of their necks with scissors, then severing their spinal cords. Pennsylvania prosecutors state that Dr. Gosnell killed the infants as he was performing illegal, late term abortions.
Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams said during a press conference announcing the charges, “Gosnell induced labor, forced the live birth of viable babies in the sixth, seventh, eighth month of pregnancy and then killed those babies by cutting into the back of the neck with scissors and severing their spinal cord.”
The prosecution believes that Dr. Kermit Gosnell has murdered hundreds of infants, however they only have enough evidence to charge him for the murder of seven infants. Additionally, Gosnell has been charged with murder in the third degree for the death of Karnamaya Mongar who died on November 29,2 009 from an overdose of anesthesia the Dr. Gosnell had prescribed. Karnamaya Mongar was 41 years old.
During the press conference held today, District Attorney Seth Williams announced that Gosnell was investigated for dispensing prescription drugs illegally in what he described as a “massive illegal drug selling operation involving prescriptions for Oxycontin and other narcotics.” It was during that investigation that investigators uncovered the grim reality of the illegal late term abortion practice.
DA Williams described the horrific scene the investigators discovered when they entered Gosnell’s abortion clinic, “Bags and bottles holding aborted fetuses were scattered throughout the building. A row of jars containing severed feet lined a shelf. Furniture and equipment was dusty and broken, urine and bloodstained.” The District Attorney continued, “Untrained, unsupervised workers injected dangerous drugs into women undergoing illegal late term abortions.”
On Wednesday, January 19, 2011, Dr. Kermit Gosnell, his wife, and eight others were arrested. They are currently in custody.
