Actress Marcia Gay Harden appeared on the February 16, 2011 edition of The View to talk about her role as the mother of Amanda Knox in the Lifetime TV movie Amanda Knox: Murder on Trial in Italy. The movie is based on the real life case of Amanda Knox, who has been convicted for the murder of college roommate Meredith Kercher in Italy. The Lifetime TV movie has caused controversy because of the way that the murder is portrayed and the movie’s portrayal of Amanda Knox herself.

Amanda Knox: Murder on Trial in Italy is set to debut on Lifetime TV on February 21, 2011. Amanda Knox’s parents, Curt Knox and Edda Mellas, are trying to have the movie blocked, because they say the characterization of their daughter could hurt her chance of winning her ongoing appeal on her murder conviction. Amanda Knox, who has been sentenced to 26 years in prison for murder, is portrayed by Hayden Panttiere in the Lifetime TV movie.

The parents of murder victim Meredith Kercher also want the movie blocked, due the the horrific treatment of their daughter’s murder. Meredith Kercher was sexually assaulted and stabbed to death in 2007. Three people have been convicted of the murder, including Amanda Knox, Raffaele Sollecito and Rudy Guede.
Curt Knox and Edda Mellas were indicted by the Italian court in Perugia on February 15, 2011 because they were accused of slandering the court system. They were accused of saying that Amanda Knox had been abused by Italian police. A trial date of July 4, 2011 has been set.
Lifetime TV movie about Amanda Knox causes controversy
Marcia Gay Harden explained that Americans may have trouble understanding the difference between the Italian and the American legal systems. In the American legal system a defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. In Italy a defendant is presumed guilty until proven innocent. There is a world of difference, as reasonable doubt does not prove innocence. The View co-host Whoopi Goldberg pointed out that this is information that is important for parents to know before they send their kids to other countries.
Harden said, ‘I feel that both mothers lost their daughters …whether she (Amanda Knox) did it or didn’t do it is not for me to say.”
As this point, Amanda Knox: Murder on Trial in Italy is scheduled to debut on February 21, 2011 on Lifetime TV.
