Those who have been described as “openly gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered” students are now granted placement into the Ottawa Catholic high schools system, according to Tom D’Amico, a superintendent for the Ottawa Catholic School Board.
He also specified, “A student who is openly gay in our schools, we want all of our students and staff to accept (them).”
Earlier this week, the Halton Catholic District School Board came under fire when it was revealed that the trustees voted last fall to ban gay-straight alliance clubs for students.
According to The Ottawa Citizen, D’Amico said the English Catholic school board doesn’t use the name “gay-straight alliance” because the Assembly of Ontario Bishops — to whom school boards look for spiritual guidance — prefer a name that reflects a more general focus on equity and social justice.
Is The Holy Bible A Right-Wing Fundamentalist Training Manual?
The Ottawa Citizen also stated that D’Amico does not intend to use the Scripture to marginalize anyone. “These teachings, we don’t want to use as condemnation for any of the students in the school.”
One of the chief proponents of allowing enrollment to students who are open in their defiance to the Teachings of the Catholic Church is Chris D’Souza, who teaches a course on building inclusive classroom for prospective teachers at York University’s Faculty of Education.
D’Souza is also a former so-called “Equity and Diversity Officer” of the Dufferin-Peel Catholic School Board.
He went on to say, “It’s the right-wing Christian groups and some of the other right-wing fundamentalists whose ideology bleeds over or taints Catholic education systems.”
What’s Being Taught…
According to the Ottawa Catholic School Board’s High School Course Guide website, the Religious Education Course Description of the textbook entitled Church and Culture, states that “the experience and tradition of the Catholic Church will be considered throughout.”
Also, the textbook World Religions aims to have the students develop “an appreciation of what it is to be a Catholic in a global and ecumenical context.”
What Catholicism Teaches…
According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church;
Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity, tradition has always declared that “homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered.” They are contrary to the natural law. Under no circumstances can they be approved.
The teaching does on to state that the homosexual inclination is defined as objectively disordered.
