Today I was lucky enough to interview ‘Mark Lawson’ who portrays that manly, sweet, imperfect but wonderful Brody Lovett of ‘One Life To Live.’
Examiner: Your character Brody has been a Sailor and a. Policeman. If you were given the choice what would you like your character’s profession to be?
Mark: I always wanted Brody to become a cop. It seemed like the most logical thing with a man with his skill set to do. As an actor and a real person, I’ve always been fascinated by the police lifestyle and the things they have to witness or clean up and the toll that takes on them. I think there is more drama there than if Brody, say, became just a dude in a suit.
Examiner: What jobs did you do before you became an actor?
Mark: I did a few of the typical actor day jobs. I tried moving furniture for one day and that was misery. I worked in a video store for two years and considered that to be sort of a film school. I would take out a stack of movies a night and was watching around the clock. My favorite job was personal training. I considered myself to be more of a private strength coach than a typical trainer.
Examiner: You have a beautiful voice. Have you worked on Broadway? If not you should. You would make a perfect leading man in a musical.
Mark: Thanks very much! Much of my background has been in Musical Theater, but I’ve never had the opportunity to do a long run professionally. Maybe some day!
Examiner: A favorite pastime on soaps is getting the men to take their shirts off. Does this bother you? It certainly does not bother your fans.
Mark: It is what it is. I’m well aware of who our target audience is. As long as I can stay in the shape that I want to be in, and do it for my own reasons then I’m fine with it. That being said, I train for athleticism, not to take my shirt off.
Examiner: How do you keep in such great shape? What is your workout routine?
Mark: This is a question too complicated to answer here. Lets put it like this: Lift heavy, run fast, punch, throw, climb, and carry things…and try to eat right.
Examiner: There are many rumors swirling around about OLTL being canceled. What do you think? I for one think OLTL is the best soap on ABC and it is the best run soap, especially with keeping costs down.
Mark: I agree with you about our show. I think it is run by an expert production team who have mastered keeping our show in the black while telling compelling story. I think there are always going to be rumors and until anything is true and there, in your face, you just keep marching….
Examiner: Do you have any hobbies besides keeping sp fit?
Mark: I do lots of reading and writing…and a little too much video gaming.
Examiner: Where do you see yourself ten years from now?
Mark:I have no idea. All I know for sure is I want to be a dad and I want to own a gym. Everything else I leave to fate.
Examiner: Now for the million dollar question. Given the choice would Brody rather be with Sweet Jess or Sinful Tess? Why?
Mark: Brody fell in love with Jessica because of their mutual understanding based on their time in St. Anne’s. I honestly beleive all Brody wants is to be left alone with the woman he loves and the family he’s been desperate to have. He can’t have any of that with Tess and he hates her with a passion.
Examiner: Who would Mark rather be with? C’mon you can tell the truth.
This has been a delightful and illuminating Interview with one of the nicest men on soaps. Thanks Mark, You were truly wonderful and your fans will love this as much I do.
