As you’ve probably heard by now, Warner Bros. issued a press release yesterday that confirmed that Anne Hathaway was indeed cast as Selina Kyle (the alter ego of Catwoman) in The Dark Knight Rises. On top of that, Tom Hardy was confirmed to be playing Bane and not Hugo Strange as once thought.
It’s interesting since most people seem to be either all for Hathaway’s addition to the cast or are putting their doubts aside since Christopher Nolan proved that casting the questionable Heath Ledger as The Joker was something special. Although I have to admit that I don’t see where all of this admiration for Hathaway is coming from. Her roles seem like they’re rather forgettable unless she shows some skin. Although, her portrayal of Maggie Murdock in Love and Other Drugs was probably the best work I’ve seen from her. Hathaway showed a wide range of emotion in the film and her struggle with Parkinson’s was done to shaky perfection (sorry, bad taste I know). Seeing her with her clothes off in the film was just a bonus. Reports are confirming that she’ll be Selina Kyle in the film, which could mean she may not don the Catwoman suit. Does everyone really think she’s suitable for the role though?
As for Tom Hardy, Bronson made me a fan of his for life. Although I was looking forward to seeing him as Hugo Strange since it would be something different, but his role as Bane makes sense since he put on 42 lbs of muscle for Bronson. The guy has the talent and is willing to beef up for the role; sounds like a winner to me. Most are questioning whether Hardy can do a Spanish accent for the character or if the character’s origin will be altered slightly to suit the English actor’s accent or at least to something within his range. No matter how he turns out though, you know it’ll be better than the Bane that appeared in Batman & Robin.
What’s interesting though is that the Prey storyline that was once thought to be the base for the film may have been proven inaccurate with these cast additions. While Catwoman was involved in the storyline, Bane wasn’t. So will the Knightfall storyline be utilized? Will we see Batman’s back broken by Bane on film?
I realize that there probably isn’t much to worry about. Christopher Nolan has proved doubters wrong before, but I also think that purely saying, “Oh, I trust Nolan’s choices 100%,” is just a cop out to not say how you really feel about these actors. Whether you agree with Nolan’s decision or not, speak your mind. Discuss. What do you think about Anne Hathaway playing Selina Kyle in The Dark Knight Rises? Is Tom Hardy the right choice for Bane?
The Dark Knight Rises is set to be released July 20, 2012.
