The Apple App Store reached its 10 billionth download today, according to Apple. The App Store, which launched a little under two and a half years ago allowing iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad app downloads, is currently the best business model for mobile gaming. Millions of people use the Apps Store everyday, including thousands of Long Islanders, who can’t live without it if they have an iPhone.
Apple also had a contest coinciding with the 10 billionth app download from the App Store, promising a $10,000 iTunes Store gift card. The winner is currently unknown, but he or she will be announced soon.
The App Store’s 10 billionth download shows its success over rival smartphones like the Droid and Windows phones. Apps were downloaded at an exponential rate over the course of the App Store’s lifetime, and that allowed the App Store to reach 10 billion downloads in almost a third of the time it took for the iTunes Store to reach the same milestone.
The easy accessibility and format of the App Store, due in no small part to its forerunner the iTunes Store, makes it a polished and copied app format on many devices. In time, it will be interesting to see how the rate of app downloads will increase or decrease with the iPhone’s arrival on the Verizon Network.
