Arizona shooting: where will Jared Lee Loughner be tried? (photos)
Jared Loughner, the man accused of shooting and killing six people and injuring 14 others, including Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords will indeed have his day in court. But the court won’t be where the shooting took place – outside a Safeway store in Tucson Arizona.
Instead, it will be in California – about 400 miles away from Tucson. For San Francisco residents it will be around a 2 hour flight away, in San Diego. The driving distance between the San Francisco Bay Area and San Diego California is 502.22 miles according to MapQuest (www.mapquest.com)
This case will always be connected to the San Francisco Bay Area because the woman who took little Christina Taylor Green to the rally was an original resident of Tiburon in the San Francisco Bay Area. Susan Hileman had been on the school board there. Christina Taylor Green died from a gunshot wound to the chest and she was buried last week. See more on that article here
The change of venue, according to San Francisco newspaper, sfgate.com is because it’s unlikely Jared Lee Loughner will get a fair trial in his home city after all the publicity that has taken place there.
One of the shooting victims was Judge John Roll whose funeral was last week. See that article here
Last week in Tucson a district court judge ruled that all judges in the district were to recluse themselves from the case.
Now U.S. District Court Judge Larry A. Burns of the Southern District of California has been called to preside over the case.
In the meantime, Jared Lee Loughner, has been described by those who have seen him as showing no remorse for his actions.
The New York Post says one prison worker describes his eyes as seeming “dead—he’s pure evil.” Another visitor to the prison where he is located has said:
He’s shown no remorse. No crying or anything. He’s segregated, but when he’s out, he’s, like, with six guards.
San Francisco residents are learning that Loughner is currently in the prison’s “special housing unit,” or “SHU.” Pelican Bay Prison which is 370 miles north of San Francisco also has an SHU unit and SHU inmates are held there in isolation 22.5 hours per day in their undecorated cell and have one hour alone in a small indoor exercise yard. Radios and TVs are allowed.
There is no contact with other prisoners.
Loughner is in a secure area of the prison, said a source to the New York Post, for his own and other’s protection:
We’re not going to subject anyone to undue harm. We’re here to protect him from the community and the community from him.
