Do you have bad AT&T cell phone coverage? Been a customer for a long time? In the top 7.5% of 3G wireless customers identified as likely to experience poor coverage? (Ok, so the last one only AT&T knows) You may be getting a free 3G MicroCell.
The Free 3G MicroCell will not incur any additional fees but will have to verbally agree to a 1 year contract on the MicroCell service. If you cancel within 12 months you will either have to return the MicroCell to AT&T or pay a $199.99 equipment fee.
The MicroCells require a broadband connection in order to function. It basically is a 3G antenna tower attached to your broadband connection where your phone calls will be transmitted using VOIP to AT&T. There are no details on how far the MicroCell will reach but given FCC oversight of all wireless transmissions we guess that there won’t be a far range on this service. Most likely in your house within a few hundred feet of the MicroCell.
The timing of this is slightly suspect. AT&T has obviously known about the signal issues for a long time. It would be hard for anyone not to know about AT&T’s issues with the iPhone and poor coverage with dropped calls. Now that they have competition they are suddenly interested in helping out their customers with poor coverage.
