I am just coming back into the media after being off with an arm injury. I had a lot of time to think during that time. I write a pet’s column. Not your usual pet column, because I tend to take on the hard issues. The hoarders, dogfighting, bad breeders, puppy mills, animal abuse etc.. The ironic thing is I went into this as a part time diversion for retirement, but within months was labeled an “activist”, what a hoot. If standing up for the basic rights that should be accorded any living being, then yes, I accept the title, proudly. I also found a new calling. Pit bulls. Got into into it accidently, fell in love with the breed.
I’ve been banned from some towns (Poplar Bluff, MO doesn’t seem to like me) which is sad. Ignorance is sad. Look at the shows on Oprah about the racial profiling of the 60’s. We are profiling right now based on nothing but fear. Only it is dogs as well as people now. I took a pit off death row, just to test my theory. I have 15 animals. So I took a chance on the unknown. It took work, but within 4 months he helped me raise 2 orphan kittens, threw himself over me during a recent tornado, and lives with 3 other male pits and 4 cats. Yes, it took me time.. Lead with love. I have 3 male pit bulls. They now all sleep together, eat together and protect me. Yet, they terrify people by their looks. Why? It is just the outside.
The most gratifying moment recently, and I’ve had a lot. My daughter’s boyfriend was terribly intimidated by Denver (the death row rescue) . He met him 2 months into the process. Denver had been abused by men; my daughter’s boyfriend was allergic and rightfully intimidated by him. Denver tried his best to intimidate. Brice, god love him, isn’t a dog person. He comes to our house and it is like overload. But he stuck with it. Treats in hand.
The gratifying part for me, is almost magical. This Christmas Eve, Denver and Brice bonded. Denver climbed on the couch with Brice and let him man- handle him. Brice could look in his mouth, touch his paws, take his big head in his…a match was made. Brice asked if he could have Denver. No. But I have promised to socialize a pit for him, as I will for many of you that are serious. Open your hearts. Forget the media hype. They are dogs. In my opinion, the best dogs. So we are looking for a retirement place. Poplar Bluff, MO is out obviously. Too bad, we are great residents.
