The Loft Cinema is Tucson’s premier art house independent theater, offering the best indie films, special events with filmmakers, HD broadcasts of operas from around the world, and so much more. Another special part of The Loft is the idea that it is a community supported theater, one that you can and should be a part of. With prices beginning at $75 for an individual (cheaper prices for students of $45), you can reap the benefits that far out weight this small investment. With a free screening every month, two free tickets when you sign up, and free popcorn at every movie you go to, the membership pays for itself with this stuff alone. Add in the fact that you only have to pay $5 instead of $9 for most films screened (special events have different pricing, but members still get a discount) and this is probably the best deal in town for a fan of film. I get my membership as a birthday gift every year and it is the best one I get for sure. If you were a member, you could attend tonight’s screening of Made in Dagenham for free (you can still attend the screening even if you are not a member, you just have to pay). Free screening time is 7:30pm on January 14th.
Made in Dagenham tells the true story of a group of women working at a Ford Motor Company plant in Dagenham, England in the 1960s. They work under horrible conditions, face disrespect from their male bosses at every turn, yet they find an inner strength to stand up and fight for equality and happiness. This film has been getting insanely strong reviews and is one I look forward to seeing tonight. The Loft has a knack for finding films like this that would otherwise slip through the cracks, instead giving the film fans of Tucson opportunities that people in many other cities do not get. And honestly, movies about women are something I dig, as if they make it to the screen, they are usually great since studios clearly do not make as many films about the fairer sex. Also, nabbing four nominations from the British Independent Film Awards is a pretty good indicator.
Support Tucson’s community driven art house theater that has no peers and head out tonight, Friday January 14th at 7:30pm for the Free Members Screening of Made in Dagenham at The Loft Cinema. If you are not a member, don’t wait any longer, just do it, you’ll feel better about yourself and get a whole lot of bang out of your entertainment dollar at The Loft.
