Benezett PA is a little town nestled amoung majestic mountains. It is the elk capital of Pennsylvania, located in Elk County PA. It is not uncommon to see elk sun bathing at the local post office or in someone’s backyard. It is full of wildlife that seems to pop up around every bend.
There are several elk viewing areas in and around Benezett. Route 555 is a great place to start as it takes you into and out of Benezett and the elk frequent this road. Winslow Hill is the most popular viewing area and The Elk Country Visitor Center just opened at this location.
The Elk Country Visitor Center is a state of the art education and conservation facility that makes learning fun for the entire family. They have an Immersive Theater that shows a 22 minute movie detailing the behavior and history of elk. Tickets are $3.00, children under 5 are free. The show runs every hour and every half hour.
If you want to get a closer look at the elk try the centers horse drawn wagon tours. During the winter hours the tours take place at 1,2,3 and 4pm weather permitting, on Saturdays and Sundays.The wagon only holds 10 people so reservations are recommended and may be obtained by calling 814-787-5167.
They also have wheelchair accessible trails where you can watch elk in their natural environment. There are many exhibits that are touch screen enabled to offer interactive experiences. The Discovery Room is a hands on environment for children and families. The Elk Country Visitor Center is a must when visiting Benezett.

The next place to see elk in their natural environment is Hicks Run and Gray Hill Rd. The best time to view elk at these locations is just after sunrise and just before sunset. These areas are easy to find, and local folk that frequent the restaurants while help you out.
September is an especially busy time for Benezett because it is the beginning of elk bugling season. The town tends to get very crowded but if you can handle the increased traffic it is worth the hassle to experience it at least once in your life. Since the town and surrounding areas get so busy it is best to reserve your accomodations in advance. There are several different hotels, bed and breakfasts, and campgrounds in the area.
