Tonight, dozens of film lovers living in Fresno and all across the country tuned in to watch the results of ABC News and People Magazine’s vote for the absolute best that Hollywood has to offer and ever has offered.
Best in Film: The Greatest Movies of Our Time was a two-hour program that revealed the top five results in fifteen catagories of film. The voting was held from late November 2010 to early January of this year, and the winners were chosen from a list of English-language film nominees devised by an elite panel of experts, which included dozens of actors, directors, producers and critics. Over 500,000 votes came in from the online poll, powered by Sodahead.com.
The results that were revealed in the show were quite telling as Airplane! was chosen as the numer one comedy of all time. In science fiction, the top honor went to Star Wars, while The Sound of Music was crown the number one musical. Raiders of the Lost Ark was name dhte number one action film of all time, while The Silence of the Lambs was honored as the number one suspence film, and The Lion King was crowned the number one animated film of all time.
There were also catagories not for film genres but for fin best in film moments and traditontions, such as Gone with the Wind being recognized both for the greatest kiss scene of all time between Vivian Leigh and Clark Gable, as well as for Gable uttering the greatest line in film history, “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.” Tom Hanks’ performance as the title character in Forrest Gump was also named the greatest film character of all time.
But the top honor of the night went to the films chosen as the top five best films, of which E.T. came in at number five, Casablanca at number four, The Godfather at number three, The Wizard of Oz at number two, and Gone with the Wind was voted by the people as the umber one greatest film of all time.
There were still other catagories for whom the winners did not make it onto the broadcast tonight, including Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet winning Most Romantic Screen Couple for thier performances in Titanic, The Exorcist being named Best Horror Film, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid as Best Western, The Notebook for Best Chick-Flick, and Schindler’s List for Best Political/Historical Film.
