Like the other lists I’ve been working on this is not a best and worst list it’s simply a guide to help you discover some television nuggets you might be missing. Things like LOST or Mad Men are great shows to be sure but my goal is to give you some different ideas on shows/mini-series you might have overlooked or possibly just dismissed.
No order of listing, just a list I really don’t think this years list needs to be defined in that way just enjoy it’s not a competition.
Best TV Shows (On DVD) That You Might Not Have Been Watching In 2010:
While this one was short lived it had its merits and place within the Battlestar Universe. Trouble is fans of Battlestar Galactica may have had a tough time understanding how different this show was going to be; gone were the massive battles and sexy drama they loved and I admit when the pilot aired I was one of those who didn’t see much going on in this show. When the first part of the season came up to review I dove in and by episode three I was hooked. The second half of the season really had this show hitting its stride and while I’m sad its gone I am happy that its going to segue into the new Blood And Chrome series. As a fan I’m prepared to ride this ship until the flight pods fall off, and if you have a love of science fiction you might find this series a great hold over or gateway to other things.
Spartacus: Blood And Sand – The Complete First Season:
Here’s a show I didn’t give much though to; I gave the pilot a shot and really just thought it was going to be a 300 knock off. When the DVD set arrived for review I popped it in during a week of trips to the dentist (fun right?!) and couldn’t stop watching it. This show has some great elements to it and shouldn’t be judged by its cover, give this one a spin and get caught up in all the intrigue, political maneuvering, the action, and yes the fleshy sexy goodness. The show is set to return (likely 2012) without Andy who is still recovering from health issues, he’ll be missed in this part the guy really made this show work and it’ll be tough to fill those sandals, get better soon Andy I’d love to see you back on Spartacus are anywhere else for that matter.
Sherlock: Season One (BBC):
Sherlock gets reinvented in this series and that is an awesome thing, this version is smart, funny, and at times pretty gritty. The idea of yet another incarnation of the great detective might not be appealing to some but this is not the typical dry English sleuth you know, this is fast paced and very thrilling. Check this one out and tell them Watson sent you.
Twilight Zone Seasons 1 & 2 [Blu-Ray]:
While this is clearly not a new show, this is a new way to watch it. With the first two seasons not only does this look and sound amazing they also loaded it with tons of extras and fun stuff to check out. The even better news is that they are releasing these at a steady pace which means there’s more zone just on the horizon.
While I consider myself a pacifist (at least until the zombie invasion starts next year) I do love watching things about war. While I’m not sure that I love this as much as Band of Brothers I did enjoy this one quite a bit and now that its out on DVD and Blu-Ray everyone can check this out and get their wargasm rocking.
Much like the Planet Earth this is a must have on Blu-Ray because not only is this loaded with some wonderful scenes of nature that will amaze as well as educate it is just jaw dropping glorious to just sit and look at in high def. Heck if for no other reason just pick this up to show off your set up and look smart doing so.
Cougar Town Season One:
A tragic name for a great show. Thankfully the creators abandoned the cougar side of the premise early on and focused on what was great with the cast and characters. What makes this show work is the chemistry between these people and the silliness that happens as a result. We all need to laugh and the residents of cougar town know how to make you feel welcome to do it.
The IT Crowd: The Complete Fourth Season:
Nerds and comedy; two great things that go great together and the BBC knows just how to make it work. Forget that Big Bang show, that show got old and stale double quick The IT crowd has been consistently funny from jump and continues to bring something funny and silly with each episode. This one you can even watch on Netflix Instant so you’ve got no reason to miss out on this.
Archer Season One:
Imagine if you will that James Bond was a filthy minded momma’s boy, now imagine they made that into a cartoon. Now understand that no matter how foul or funny you conjured that thought up the show is so far beyond what you had in mind. The show is very strange but very funny if you like to play rough, might not be for everyone but if you enjoy stuff like South Park, Ugly Americans, Venture Brothers, or American Dad then this could fit right in for you and good news because season two is just about to kick off.
Lie To Me Season Two:
One day I’ll get my dream of a Psych, Mentalist, Lie To Me crossover. Seriously imagine these guys together in a room trying to solve a crime and that’s a slice of awesome you wont soon forget. But to get back on point Lie To Me is a show that I love warts and all, its creative and I love watching Tim Roth work a room but there are some episodes that just fall flat or just loose steam but its worth taking in the lesser episodes for the ones that really fly.
Mind you there are loads of other films out there worth checking out that didn’t make the list, but this list has to end somewhere so we can move on to the next one. Like the ones found right here:
