Bethesda is a quintessential warm-weather town. For three seasons out of the year, it’s hopping with people from all over the DC area… Teenagers meeting friends outside the Barnes and Noble, couples toting children into a farm-fresh restaurant, twenty-somethings looking for a fun night out… the energy is palpable.
Winter tells a slightly different story. Taking a break from the countless outdoor activities and strolling, residents tend to nestle in and hibernate a bit. However, there are many different places where you can go, stretch out your legs and find a great time out of the house while still staying warm. Here are a few favorites!
Enjoy a world-class concert: The Strathmore Music Center is a state of the art performance venue located in North Bethesda. A partnership with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra ensures a steady stream of exciting and diverse performances throughout the season including everything from classical symphonies to jazz standards to live acts like the Peking Acrobats and celebrity guests such as Patti LaBelle.
Escape the cold with some exotic tea: Zen Tara Tea is one cozy shop that knows their teas. With over 100 teas brewed to order by the cup or teapot, along with bubble tea, Thai iced tea, light snacks and even coffee, it’s the perfect place to bring a book or laptop (they have free WiFi) and enjoy the afternoon. Try a cup of the delicate coconut oolong to really escape the winter blues.
Try for a strike: Bowling is the perfect cold-weather activity and the trendy Bowlmor Lanes combines both form and function. What is a fun, family friendly venue during the day becomes a real nightlife destination after the sun goes down, complete with black lights, Top 40 music and a stocked bar for the over 21 crowd.
Enjoy a pub quiz with a pint of ale: There are no shortages of traditional trivia nights in downtown Bethesda; there are 5 to choose from each week! On Monday, head to Flanagan’s Harp & Fiddle, Tuesday try RiRa or Union Jack’s and on Wednesday, Blackfinn. With happy hour specials and mind-stretching questions, grab your friends and enjoy a rowdy evening of thought-provoking fun.
Take in an indie show at the cinema: The Bethesda Row Cinema is known for having the latest independent and foreign films. But with stadium seating, plush chairs and gourmet concessions including an espresso bar, the theater is also a destination in itself. Located in the heart of Bethesda Row, it’s the perfect nightcap to one of the delicious nearby restaurants such as Mon Ami Gabi, Jaleo or Redwood.
