Billy Ray Cyrus on Miley Cyrus: Enough is Enough
In a move many parents and other bystanders have been hoping he would make for years, Nashville’s Billy Ray Cyrus has finally told GQ Magazine “Enough is enough.” Cyrus was referring to daughter Miley’s poor decisions in recent years including her “pole dance” and other foibles as many have wondered if Miley Cyrus was going too far.
Trying to Be a Friend Instead of a Parent to Miley
Admitting he never knew how to discipline his children, Cyrus says he now regrets his former belief that being a friend to Miley was the right way to raise her. saying, “How many interviews did I give and say, ‘You know what’s important between me and Miley is I try to be a friend to my kids’? I said it a lot. And sometimes I would even read other parents might say, ‘You don’t need to be a friend, you need to be a parent.’ Well, I’m the first guy to say to them right now: You were right. I should have been a better parent. I should have said, ‘Enough is enough—it’s getting dangerous and somebody’s going to get hurt.’ I should have, but I didn’t. Honestly, I didn’t know the ball was out of bounds until it was way up in the stands somewhere.”
Hannah Montana a Wedge Between Billy Ray & Miley
Billy Ray Cyrus says he noticed the show was driving a wedge between him and Miley after “Hannah Montana’s” second season. He points out he never managed Miley’s career, and that decisions were frequently taken out of his hands, but that he was called in for damage control every time Miley pulled a stunt that got her in trouble. He says recently when rumors were flying about Miley’s management trying to get her fan’s cell phones and computers that had the photos of the underaged Miley drinking in Spain, he contacted her management and was told it was none of his business.
Billy Ray’s Fears & Faith
Cyrus told GQ he now fears for his daughter and that he’d like to try to help to get her out of danger. In the interview he reveals that just before moving out to Los Angeles, the whole family had been baptized together by their pastor at the People’s Church in Franklin, Tennessee. In hindsight Cyrus says, “Somewhere along this journey both mine and Miley’s faith has been shaken.”
Focus on the Family on Billy Ray & Miley
Jim Daly of “Focus on the Family” sees this as an object lesson for all parents. He says the big question parents should be concerned with is: “Do we want to be their best pal – or their parent who often has to hold firm and say ‘no’ when they desperately want us to say ‘yes’?”
Faith & Values
Now that Billy Ray Cyrus has recognized and addressed some of the root causes of his issues with Miley, perhaps he will be able to forge a new accountability relationship with his daughter based on the values and faith they both claim to share.
