Bo Derek was an iconic sex symbol in the 1980s, but looks incredible at age 59, thanks to a mostly vegetarian, flexitarian diet and an active lifestyle that includes open water swimming.
Derek, who starred in the 1979 movie 10, said her anti-aging beauty and fitness secrets are a flexitarian diet where she eats everything in moderation and does chores around her ranch.
Bo revealed on the “Oprah Show” that she shuns regimented workouts in favor of horseback riding and caring for her 110-acre ranch in Santa Ynez, California, as Examiner has reported.
While shoveling horse manure, hauling bags of food to feed her horses and dogs and doing chores around a sprawling ranch is hardly glamorous, it’s a strenuous work that burns calories and requires plenty of strength.
Derek follows a flexitarian diet, a mostly vegetarian diet that occasionally includes meat, Celebrity Health Fitness reported.
The anti-aging health and weight loss benefits of a flexitarian diet are no surprise to Dawn Jackson Blatner, author of The Flexitarian Diet.
Studies show flexitarians weigh less, have a lower rate of heart disease, diabetes and cancer, and live four years longer than their carnivorous counterparts, said Blatner.
Dr. Neal Barnard agrees. “A diet of minimally processed foods close to nature — predominantly plants — is decisively associated with health promotion and disease prevention,” said Dr. Barnard, author of the 21-Day Weight Loss Kickstart.
Has Not Had Plastic Surgery But Wishes Her Wrinkles Would Disappear
Despite being celebrated for her sex appeal during her 20s and 30 Derek has not had plastic surgery on her face. “When you look at women who have had plastic surgery, they have lost something – usually an expression, something unique to their face,” Bo has said.
“They start to look the same. I’ve always admired the women who didn’t do it, so I have to keep reminding myself I’m one of them and not the other.”
Derek, who has been called a “Perfect 10” for much of her life, doesn’t spend too much time worrying about aging. “I tend not to worry about things I can’t do anything about,” she said. “It’s not in my nature to spend too much time thinking. But sometimes I see photographs of myself, and I jump a little.”
Still, Derek, who dislikes the jowls in her neck and the wrinkles on her face, occasionally wishes she hadn’t spent so much time getting sunburned when she was younger.
When I look at some photographs of myself, I think, “Oh, I look alright. ” But in others, I scare myself; I wish I had my old skin.”
Bo, who has posed nude in “Playboy,” is pragmatic about her looks. “Beauty was something I was born with,” she said. “I had nothing to do with it.”
While Derek acknowledges she has the “right body type and bone structure” to be considered attractive, she’s not hung up on it as much as other Hollywood beauties are. Bo doesn’t have many anti-aging beauty secrets other than exfoliating her face every day and wearing hair pieces to camouflage her thinning hair.
Derek, who was married for 22 years to director John Derek before he died of heart disease in 1998 at the age of 71, has been dating actor John Corbett since 2002.
Bo and Corbett, 55 (who played Aidan Shaw on Sex and the City), now live together on her California ranch, but have no plans to marry or have children.
“For a long time I wanted children,” Bo said. “When I was about 30 or 32, I really thought about it. But John [Derek] had two children from a previous marriage, and it wasn’t really natural for him.
I had to consider that eventually I would be raising a child alone.
So when the time came, he said yes, we were all set, I said, ‘No.’ “
Ironically, the woman who was married for two decades to a man 30 years older is now happily in love with a man four years younger.
Looking back, Derek now admits that the 30-year age gap between her and her late husband caused difficulties in the later years of her marriage. “There were things he couldn’t do physically,” Bo recalls. “He was starting to see his own mortality and it was bothering him. It wasn’t his nature to be infirm in any way.”
Derek, who has no desire to remarry, would never fall for someone so much older now. Bo says she was immediately attracted to the strapping, 6-foot-5 Corbett when they first met in 2002.
“It was love at first sight,” said Bo. “I was crazy about him from that moment. He’s charming and funny – so different from my husband. And he’s younger than me.”
Derek says she’s the happiest she’s ever been. “That doesn’t mean I have it all together and that I don’t fall apart sometimes,” said Bo. “But that’s got to be the trade-off for your physical deterioration — your mind gets better and you’re happy about yourself.”
