Last night’s all new episode of ‘Brothers and Sister’s answers one big question: yes, Sarah (Rachel Griffiths) is a Walker. But, what she doesn’t realize is that her trip to see Nora’s (Sally Field) old flame Brody (Beau Bridges), spurs him to make a trip to see Nora. The cat is out of the bag when Brody calls Nora’s show. Both she and Sarah recognize his voice right away, and Sarah panics, fearing her mother’s wrath. Nora is frazzled when Brody seeks advice about contacting a woman from his past. She advises him not to just show up and surprise her, that women don’t like surprises. But, when she goes home, she finds his RV parked out in front of her house.
Beau Bridges does an excellent job playing Brody, a charismatic wanderer. He travels with the semi-pro baseball team he runs and his 14-year-old dog, Lily. Brody tells Nora that Sarah told him she had been talking about him and encouraged him to come see her. Nora plays it off, saying she only brought him up because Sarah found her birth certificate online and there were issues with it, along with other paternity issues in the family, which caused Sarah to jump to conclusions.
Brody remarks that he had always pegged William as a cheater and Nora denies it, saying he was a wonderful husband. She also alludes to their past, and says that Brody was never into the idea of marriage or having a family.
When his dog, Lily, becomes ill, Nora goes with him to the vet. They discover the dog has a tumor, which the doctor removes, so she turns out to be fine. Nora asks Brody why he’s there. He tells her when he first met Sarah, he thought she’d come to tell him she had died. Then he started thinking about all the regrets he had, and the times he wanted to contact her and didn’t. He resigns that it seems upon finding her, Nora ended up with the right man. Nora admits she got the family she wanted but William was a terrible husband: a cheater, a liar and an embezzler. Brody said he never liked William but he likes his chances now that William is dead.
Nora said that Brody is the same guy, always off in search of the next game and she is not the same little girl. Brody maintains she is, just older and wiser. The next day, they say goodbye after Nora tours the RV. As he drives away, Nora gazes wistfully after him. Sarah comes in asking Nora how they left things. Nora says she has learned not to count on Brody and when he drives away, it can always be the last time you see him. Her phone rings and she talks quickly, hangs up and grabs a can of tuna fish.
Sarah questions her and follows her to find Lily lying bandaged on the floor. She was the one who needed tuna fish. Nora tells Sarah the dog needs bed rest. Sarah smiles, both of them knowing that Brody will definitely come around again. While one question was answered, several questions reman. What will happen then? Will Nora rekindle the old spark? Will she take a chance on someone who professes he can ‘never stay put’? We’ll just have to wait and see…
