Have I mentioned that this is the greatest job ever? Case in point: I was invited this week to help Café Circa celebrate their third birthday. This culinary jewel, located near the intersection of Edgewood and Boulevard in the Old Fourth Ward, was studded with the young and upwardly mobile Wednesday night, tasting fine wines, small plates, and aged scotch. The atmosphere is both casual and sophisticated with dark woods, a classic backlit bar, and swathes of light fabric to afford privacy and a lighter air.
This evening, Executive Chef Hopeton Hibbert prepared special small dishes, some not on the menu, to compliment each of the wines. Mike “the Wine Guy” Leo poured and talked us through 2 whites and 3 reds. Though I’m hardly a wine expert, I thought each new pairing was better than the last.
- Glory Days Viognier, California, 2008
Spicy Crab and Mango Salad
- Wente Chardonnay, California, 2008
Strawberry and Goat Cheese Cucumber Stack with Sorrel Drizzle
- Silverstone Cabernet Sauvignon, California, 2008
Cuban Spiced Chicken and Plantain Spring Roll with Guava Dipping Sauce (my favorite)
- Fourteen Hands Cabernet Sauvignon, Washington, 2008
Seared Steak with Spiced Chocolate Sauce
- Mark Davidson North Bore Shiraz, Australia, 2006
Stewed Goat with a Habanero Tomato Sauce
This was the limit of what my palate could properly distinguish, but I love scotch, so succumbed to the offer to try 5 different single malts.
- Wemyss Smooth Gentleman, 10 years
- Wemyss Spice King, 10 years (my favorite)
- Wemyss Peat Chimney, 10 years
- Singleton, 12 years
- Macallan, 12 years
Though it may be anathema to a purist, I found Mike’s suggestion of adding a splash of water or a single ice cube helped bring out the flavor and aroma of each.
Café Circa’s menu is mostly tapas, but with a Carabean and Latin flair. They are also known for music, featuring special $20 “Dinner and Blues” Mondays with live performances from legendary singer Francine Reed. Upstairs is their new lounge, The Reserve. This will re-open with warmer weather, probably in early March, and feature drinks, cigars, and skyline views.
