A professor in Germany, Roland Lauster, believes he has finally discovered a cure for baldness. Now, do we add this to the list of snake-oil remedies or is this for real? Lauser, a scientist at Berlin Technical University, says that he has been able to regrow hair follicles from stem cells (the body’s multipurpose cells that can be grown into any tissue in the human body). Researchers say that such cells can be implanted onto the scalp “so that dead follicles can be resurrected, and baldness consigned to the scrapheap of history.”
Don’t rush out and buy your plane ticket to Germany just yet. So far the scientists have only been able to achieve this feat in mice, but Lauster says “it could be available for humans within five years.”
There was a report in July that “a cure was in sight” based on the discovery of a genetic link to hair loss. A company named Histogen has a hair growth stimulant in the works that is being held up by a lawsuit. The company or person coming up with a guaranteed cure could make a fortune since the hair loss industry is estmated to be worth $1 billion a year.
Atlanta facial plastic surgeon, and hair transplant expert, Dr. Brian Maloney, states that “as one of the FDA sites for cloning, I can tell you that stem cells may play a role. The challenge is that hair grows in a certain pattern. This is the variable which has not been figured out. Cloned hair tends to grow every which way.”
Until the miracle cure, hair transplants seem to be your best bet.. Contact Dr. Brian Maloney at 770.804.0007 for a consultation. Dr. Maloney’s office, The Maloney Center, is located at 6111 Peachtree Dunwoody Road, Building E, Suite 201, Atlanta, GA 30328
