**Carmelo Anthony was traded to the New York Knicks on Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011**
Carmelo Kyam Anthony was born in the Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. His father died of cancer when he was two years old, and his family moved to Baltimore when Melo was eight.
Anthony was drafted third overall in the 2003 NBA Draft by the Nuggets and has played all seven of his full NBA seasons with Denver. Carmelo is the starting shooting forward for the Denver Nuggets ahead of Gary Forbes.
In just one collegiate season, Anthony led the Syracuse Orangemen to their only NCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship at the end of the 2002-2003 Season. Carmelo was the consensus national Freshman of the Year and a Second Team All American. Melo was previously named a First Team All American out of high school and was selected for the McDonald’s All American Team.
Anthony has averaged better than 20 points per game in each of his eight NBA Seasons, including the 2010-2011 Season. The 2009-2010 Season saw Carmelo average the third best points per game in the NBA with 28.2 PPG, a career high.
However, Carmelo’s best overall statistical year came during the 2007-2008 Season. Anthony 1,978 points, the second most of his career, and shot an outstanding 49% from the field. Melo also set career highs in steals (98) and rebounds (571) to go with his best offensive efficiency and player ratings to date.
In 2004 & 2008 Carmelo Anthony represented the United States at the Summer Olympics. The disappointing bronze medal won during the 2004 campaign motivated Anthony, along with fellow 2003 draftee Lebron James, to focus on nothing less than gold in 2008. Four years later, the two led Team USA to wins in all eight games on the way to Olympic gold in Beijing.
Anthony’s 2010-2011 campaign has been hampered by minor injuries and a major loss. Melo’s sister Michelle died from a pre-existing condition on December 21st, 2010 in Baltimore, Maryland. Anthony left the Nuggets immediately to be with family. He returned nine days later for practice and played on New Years Day.
Anthony has also been the subject of trade rumors since the close of the 2009 campaign. The Nuggets have entertained numerous offers from the New York Knicks and the New Jersey Nets. However, the team has repeatedly opted to keep the face of the franchise in Denver in hopes that Melo will sign a contract extension with the Nuggets.
Carmelo Anthony’s existing contract with the Denver Nuggets ends at the close of the 2010-2011 Season.
