Buckle your seatbelts, Castle fans, it’s about to get really turbulent on ABC!
Things were tense last week when Castle (Nathan Fillion) and Beckett (Stana Katic) found themselves on opposite sides of belief over a murder suspect’s guilt, but that barely scratched the surfaced compared to what’s about go down tonight in the David Amann penned “Setup” (Part 1) in which the NYPD investigates the murder of a cabdriver only to find themselves embroiled in a terrorism case.
The tenth anniversary of September 11th is mere months away, but Castle seems to be getting a head start of reminding people that terrorists are still potentially just around the corner, and they have many faces.
Perhaps their squabbling over his friend’s case is still taking a toll on their relationship because “Setup” is not filled with the typical (and beloved!) banter between the partners. Even at the start of the case, when they don’t realize how serious it’s about to get, they keep a distance between them that one might not expect. Maybe in some respects they are still not sure how to proceed after the kiss. After all, they never really discussed what they felt, still chalking it up to a perfectly timed “cover.” But things are definitely strained, and it’s affecting not only their relationship but also Beckett and Josh (Victor Webster)’s.
Yes, Josh is back momentarily but only to say good-bye to (and get a pretty chilly shoulder from) Beckett before he heads off on another Doctors Without Borders trip. He’s cute and all, but lately he seems to have let himself go, and if there was passion there, it seems to have fizzled out. Probably right around the time she bumped lips with Castle, wouldn’t you say?
With such a heavy topic to “Setup”, though, and as the stakes continue to grow with a dirty bomb loose somewhere in the city, an FBI agent (special guest star Adrian Pasdar) taking over the investigation and kicking Beckett and Castle off of it, and more and more conspiracy-esque elements that all lead to a frame job, this is nowhere near a typical Castle episode. The subject matter is dark and heavy, and from minute one, even before they know where their case will lead them, it seems to weigh them down. There is no room for humor, snark, or wit (but for one more nod to Fillion’s previous project, Serenity). Instead, the episode brings you to the brink of fear time and again.
And did you catch the “Part 1” to the episode title? When 10:59pm rolls around you will be left with a serious (and potentially deadly) cliffhanger for our couple. And since it’s actually the second such moment within the episode, and during the first one they came thisclose to finally talking about their feelings, you might want to prep for some big verbal revelations next week.
…Or then again they may just be way too focused on trying to get themselves out than to worry about deep confessions. Tune into Castle on ABC tonight at 10pm and let us know what you would do in such a situation.
