President’s weekend is one of the most popular weekends of the year to ski. For most people President’s Day is a holiday so it is at least a three day weekend, maybe more. A three day weekend in the winter: what else should you do but go skiing?
There were plenty of people who had the same idea and Breck was more crowded than usual on Sunday. On busy weekends getting there early is key. We were among the first to be able to ride up Chair 6, and we took advantage. The first run down Quandary was great, we were making fresh tracks on the half foot of powder that had fallen over night. Unfortunately everyone else had shown up by the time we got to the bottom and the next two runs on Chair 6 were met with a long wait in the lift line.
On a powder day you will want to hit Imperial Bowl and that was next on the list. Imperial was not as amazing, it was pretty wind blown at the top and was very crowded. Two runs down Imperial Bowl and it was time for a change of scenery. On the way down to the T-Bar there were some nice powder stashes through Contest Bowl, down King.
Like Chair 6 the T-Bar had a long line. Also like Chair 6 though there was plenty of soft snow waiting for us on the run down. This made the wait a bit more bearable. Down Horseshoe Bowl there was plenty of snow, although visibility was kind of an issue as the winds were gusting and blowing snow right up the mountain.
In search of shorter lines and a less exposed ski area we moved over to the E Chair after lunch. Unfortunately there was no escaping the long lines, but we were more protected from the wind on the E Chair. The Windows were pretty skied off by the time we descended but there were still spots of fresh pow to ski through. Our next run down the E Chair we hit Tom’s Mom. There was plenty of soft snow, and moguls to get the legs burning.
To finish the day off we skied to the base of Peak 8 and parked ourselves at the brand new T Bar (the actual bar, not the lift). Finishing off a great powder day with a beer from Breckenridge Brewery just seemed like the right thing to do. Sitting at our table were a few Breck locals who had a similar story: they moved out here for one winter 26 years ago and haven’t left since. Where have I heard that before?
Like it has bee most of the season the skiing this weekend at Breck was great. There was fresh powder, and we were there early enough to really enjoy it. Of course a holiday weekend with great conditions it was no surprise to be standing in line as long as we did. All in all the skiing was well worth the wait and it felt good to be out celebrating President’s Day like you should: by skiing
