Jennifer Beals started her acting career in Chicago at DePaul University’s Goodman School of Drama. She returns to the Windy City streets for FOX’s new mid-season drama The Chicago Code, which premieres Monday, February 7.
Between her stints in Chicago, Jennifer Beals has grown quite an impressive film and television resume that includes the lead role on Flashdance, and a complex television character on The L Word. She’s also been on the FOX Network before as an attorney on Lie to Me. In fact, she left the show under pretense of moving to Chicago to start her own firm.
Jennifer Beals’ role on The Chicago Code
Beals plays Teresa Colvin, the first-ever female superintendent of the Chicago police force. While playing a cop might be a new thing for the actress, she feels comfortable in the Windy City. “I’ve always had a real feeling of pride in my city that I think all Chicagoans do,” Beals said in a recent interview with AOL. “It’s very fierce, and you don’t want to mess with it, for sure. Playing the police superintendent, it’s part of my job to have that.”
Beals didn’t choose the part of Superintendent Colvin just because it was set and filmed in Chicago. Her choice, naturally, also had to do with the character she’ll be playing in at least 12 episodes that The Chicago Code has filmed so far in the Windy City.
Not only is Beals interested in characters who stand up for themselves, she chose to play Colvin because she thinks it’s interesting to learn about how Colvin becomes the leader she does. She also looks forward to the relationship that develops between Teresa and Jarek (Jason Clarke), a fellow cop whom Teresa cares for and respects. It helps, too, that she’s working with Shawn Ryan, creator of The Shield, someone she admires for his writing and the way he works with his writers.
Beals has prepared for this role in a variety of ways, too. She rode-along with homicide detectives throughout the city, watching how they set up crime scenes and follow the clues.
The actress has immersed herself in Chicago in other ways, too. She’s back to being a resident in the city where she grew up, and she’s been out on the town. Most recently, she was spotted dining at R.J. Grunts.
Jennifer Beals returns to the small screen on Monday, February 7, 2011 for the pilot episode of The Chicago Code. The show airs on FOX WFLD Channel 12.
