Infant care in a childcare center requires both consistency and flexibility on the part of the teacher/caregiver. Infants come to childcare with multiple individual needs such as feeding times, diapering times, and nap times. These individual needs require that the schedule that a teacher/caregiver in an infant room implements must allow for these needs in addition to meeting developmentally appropriate learning needs. The Foundations Developmental Learning Academy Childcare Center in Sarasota has a quality schedule for infants in their care. Their infant schedule has larger periods of time allotted throughout the day to allow for learning activities and for meeting these individual needs.
Parents bring a Daily Sheet each morning when bringing their infant for care. The sheet contains information about the last feeding, last diapering, and the time that the infant woke up that morning. This information helps the teacher/caregiver in planning the infant’s day. Parents may also provide information about the feeding schedule that they would like for the caregiver to follow. A large block of morning hours from 9:30 until 11:30 is provided for participation in fine/motor/gross motor skill development, language development, and “tummy time” free play when exploring new toys. Infants may also be taken for morning walks and allowed to play on the separate infant playground. The mid-morning schedule has a large block of time from 11:30-2:30, during which individual needs are cared for. Feeding, diapering, and naptimes occur during this block of time. Infants engage in free-play on rugs during the time that the caregiver is taking care of these needs. Infants who did not have the opportunity to participate in learning activities during the morning block of time are given these activities during the afternoon hours.
Parents are given a Daily Care Log when they arrive to pick up their infant. These sheets include diapering, feeding times, and activities that the infant participated in during the day.
