With the regular season in the books, 12 of the 18 CIML boys basketball teams will open up substate play Monday night across central Iowa.
No. 2 Hoover, No. 4 Ankeny, No. 9 Waukee, Johnston, Urbandale and Valley all receive first round byes.
Here is a list of all games involving CIML teams, along with my predictions.
All games will tip-off at 7:00 PM.
Marshalltown (8-13) at Ames (7-14)
*Winner plays at Valley Friday night at 7:00 PM
My prediction: Ames’ run of back-to-back state championships will come to an end, but not until Friday night at Valley. The Bobcats have lost four straight, including a loss to a previously winless East team in their last regular season game.
Mason City (8-13) at Fort Dodge (12-9)
*Winner plays at Waukee Friday night at 7:00 PM
My prediction: Mason City brings a lot of firepower to Fort Dodge in All-Conference players Lincoln Vorba and Sam Skogen, but Fort Dodge is tough at home. The Dodgers take care of business in a close win and move on to face Waukee.
Substate # 7
North (3-18) at Lincoln (7-14)
*Winner plays at No. 4 Ankeny Friday night at 7:00 PM
My prediction: Lincoln won both regular season meetings by 10 and seven points, respectively. The Railsplitters make it a perfect 3-0 against the Polar Bears in this game. North has some good young talent, but there are not there quite yet.
East (1-20) at Southeast Polk (12-9)
*Winner plays at Johnston Friday night at 7:00 PM
My prediction: The Scarlets are coming off their first win of the season, a 51-48 victory over Marshalltown Friday night.
The Rams have a lot of work to do to return to this season’s championship game. Southeast Polk has too much offense for East to stay in this game for long. The Rams will move on to set up an interesting matchup with Central Conference rival Johnston.
Newton at Dowling Catholic (16-5)
*Winner plays at No. 2 Hoover Friday night at 7:00 PM
My prediction: The Maroons have won 10 CIML games in a row, and are one of the hottest teams in the state. They will handle the Cardinals, and move on to set up an intriguing game against an even hotter Huskies team.
Indianola (2-19) at Roosevelt (12-9)
*Winner plays at Urbandale Friday night at 7:00 PM
My prediction: Both teams enter the game on losing streaks. Roosevelt has dropped it’s last three games, while the Indians have lost five in a row.
Peter Jok and Sam Norman will be too much for Indianola to handle, and the Rough Riders will advance to take on Matt Tiby and the Urbandale J-Hawks.
