Cleveland State won three of four games to win the team title at the Austin Peay Spring Classic softball tournament in Clarksville, Tenn.
The Vikings, 5-4 on the year, capped the weekend with a 4-1 victory over Belmont after losing a 7-6 decision earlier in the day to Missouri-Kansas City.
The four-game swing in Tennessee began with Cleveland State besting Ball State 1-0 on a fourth inning solo home run by Dara Toman and 6-hit pitching by Tess Sito, who collected seven strike outs in going the distance.
Sito then raised her record to 4-2 with a 7-0 win over host Austin Peay, taking over in relief of Brandy Holmes with one out in the third and the Vikings holding a 4-0 lead. Sito gave up two hits and three walks while striking out five.
Looking to stay unbeaten in the tournament, the Vikings had trouble with UMKC, falling behind 5-0 in the top of the first with Holmes lasting just that one inning and taking the 7-6 loss.
CSU fought back, getting leadoff solo home runs from Jessica Burt in the first, Gabby Gillilan in the second and Sito in the sixth. Trailing 7-4 entering the bottom of the seventh, the Vikings got an RBI double from Burt and another run scoring double from Gillilan but Sito was unable to bring home the tying run from second when she popped out to end the game.
The Vikings then had their own first inning explosion, getting all four runs against Belmont in that first frame pounding out six hits, including a 2-run single by Alicia Nichols for the 4-1 win.
Megan Bashak went 5.0 innings, allowing three hits and a walk while striking out six for her first win. Sito closed it out allowing a run in two innings.
The Vikings will have time off before returning to action March 5-6 when they travel to Athens, Ohio to play in the Ohio University Invitational. On March 5, CSU will play at 9 a.m. against Western Illinois and at 12:30 p.m. against Ohio University.
