Just in case you have been living in a cave or on an ark, CouchSurfing.org is an international non-profit network that connects travelers with locals, in over 230 countries and territories, around the world. Started back in 2004, by fellow Burners, there are over a million CouchSurfers today.
The thrill of CouchSurfing is that anything is possible. To demonstrate this fact, I have created a “Kelly CouchSurf Montage”, based on my personal CouchSurfing experiences, to serve as Exhibit A. Thus, you have an idea as to how fun, magical, meaningful, and sometimes surreal a CouchSurf experience can be. NOTE: You have been warned! And names have been omitted to protect the guilty.
In Guatemala City, you could end up with a 50+ year old abuela, who just happens to be the conductor of the Guatemala National Symphony. She could “force” you to go to a symphony orchestra rehearsal, meet the entire Guatemalan symphony, and you could possible spend a night dancing in Zona 10 with the entire brass section.
Or you could hook-up with an independent filmmaker in London and end up filming a documentary on the English (http://current.com/items/89050472_underground_with_the_english) , with a Chihuahua, in your own personal “pod” on the Eye, or get so pissed with Scottish MP’s, that you get terribly lost in the basement of the British House of Commons (yes, they do have a bar down there!)
Or after a dolphin-decorated sailing trip on Biscayne Bay (Miami), you could get a flat tire, hitch on a public bus, and make an arrangement to procure a new tire in exchange for a circumcision (if your husband happens to be a surgeon) with a fellow CouchSurfer dragging a big red inflatable couch. You could end up with a personal tour of Anchorage from a fellow CouchSurfer who just happens to be running for the Senate of Alaska, and later end up at an Eskimo Drag Show.
Or, you could be dragged out to 6 different pubs and clubs in Aberdeen, camp out in a castle, and end up singing Johnny Cash (in public!) with a bunch of dudes in kilts. And if you are really lucky, you will participate in CouchSurf Collective, or other CouchSurf local group activity, and meet dozens of fellow travelers at the same time… anything is possible!
On that note, the very same independent filmmaker, Alexandra Liss, I met in London (with her Chihuahua), is making a new film: CouchSurfing: The Documentary. Alex is a just short of her fundraising goal for the film, therefore, she is hosting a fundraising party at 901 Columbus Cafe, in North Beach:
901 Columbus St @ Lombard St (Crooked St)
The party starts on FRIDAY FEB 25th at 6:30PM until when it ends…
$2 specialty local draft and wines all night!! (And a chance to hang with the local and visiting CouchSurfing community. )
Here is the trailer for the film:http://www.youtube.com/embed/P-CGvuxppIY
