Commercial title: Torpedo Cooler
Educated as a physicist, Brendan Hayward changed course after he graduated from college, making a move into the entertainment business. His entry into the Crash the Super Bowl contest, Torpedo Cooler, is Hayward’s second ad to make the Top Ten. In 2009, The Smackout was also a finalist. Torpedo Cooler offers a bully versus nerd scenario features intricate props, including a lit beverage cooler and computer-generated Pepsi MAX can.
Examiner: What does the term “entrepreneurial filmmaker” mean to you?
Hayward: “Being an entrepreneurial filmmaker means merging passion with pragmatism. Art for art’s sake is a wonderful ideal, but a filmmaker’s success is dependent on exposure. Successful filmmakers, therefore, are always cognizant of not only how to get their work made but also how to get it seen. If a tree falls in a film no one sees, does it make a sound? No, it doesn’t exist.”
If Hayward wins the contest, he says he’ll use the prize money to make additional speculative commercials.
