Matthew Gray Gubler plays Dr. Spencer Reid on Criminal Minds on CBS 2 in Queens. The young genius is known for his IQ of 187, eidetic memory, ability to read 20,000 words per minute, and multiple degrees.
Schizophrenia and drugs
Reid kept his mother Diana’s schizophrenia a secret from the team until she became involved in a case when a fellow patient from the mental institution he placed her in was the unsub. When he was kidnapped by Tobias Hankel and drugged, he had flashbacks from his childhood which including sending Diana away when he turned 18. After he was kidnapped and tortured by Tobias Hankel, Reid developed an addiction to Dilaudid but was able to get himself clean.
He has told Morgan and Hotch about less than pleasant experiences in high school as a child prodigy.
When a case brought the BAU to his childhood home of Las Vegas, Reid began remembering the murder of a boy named Riley Jenkins from when he was a child and suspected his father of the crime. However he found out that the murderer was a man who had approached Reid when he was four and playing chess in the park. It turned out that Riley’s father killed that man and Diana was a witness. The whole ordeal was too much for Reid’s father, who soon left Spencer and his mother.
More recently, Reid has begun suffering from headaches and hallucinations, but the doctor couldn’t find anything physical to explain the symptoms. He suggested they could be psychosomatic, and the fear of inheriting his mother’s schizophrenia has returned. He did tell Prentiss about his headaches, but has been keeping them a secret otherwise.
While looking for a stalker, Reid did grow closer than he should have to the victim, Lila, and has used magic tricks to try to impress girls in a bar. He did ask JJ to go to a Redskins game with him, but nothing happened after that one date.
Despite the apparently failed date, Reid and JJ are very close. She’s the only one to call him “Spence” and after she gave birth to Henry, she asked him to be his godfather. When he broke down after JJ told the team that Prentiss died on the table after a confrontation with Doyle, JJ was the one to comfort him.
Though his friendship with Prentiss hit a rocky patch when she called him out on his odd behavior (due to the drug addiction) after being captured by Tobias Hankel, they did become close and he felt responsible when she gave herself up to Benjamin Cyrus as the undercover FBI agent and was subsequently beaten. She’s the only one who knows about his recent headaches.
Morgan, though he teases Reid and has nicknames for him, including “kid” and “pretty boy,” is very protective of Reid. He was the first one Reid told the story of being stripped and tied to a goal post in high school.
Garcia is close to everyone on the team, and her relationship with Reid is no exception. He has talked to her about his mother and the genetic theory of schizophrenia.
Reid obviously looks up to Hotch, and when his Unit Chief had to kick him when they were captured by an unsub didn’t affect that mentor relationship. Reid also trusted him to understand the message he sent when Hankel had him—and he was right to do so.
When Rossi first joined the team, Reid was obviously in awe around him because he had looked up to the older profiler for some time. However, he did calm down soon after.
