Dallas nerd rockers unite; Adam WarRock brings his unique brand of nerdcore rap to Alexandre’s bar next Sunday for one electrifying performance. What, you say you’ve never heard of nerdcore rap? Well, shawty, it be like this: WarRock is part RZA, part Drake with a little Stephen Hawking thrown in for good measure. This nerd culture icon would rather sing about topics like Spider-Man and wormholes than about traditional rap topics like sipping on Ciroc and smoking blunts. “I’m a geek,” the creative do-it-yourselfer says. “I tend to rap about geeky things.” Case in point, his debut single “Ira Glass” made him the darling of the internet rap scene.
Adam WarRock is in town shooting an episode of The Variants, the hit comedy web TV series based on the real life adventures of Eisner-winning Dallas comic book shop Zeus Comics and Collectibles. Sunday’s performance will be videotaped for use in an upcoming episode, and the cast of The Variants will be in attendance. WarRock is a longtime fan of series, and also penned the theme song for the show’s second season. The concert is produced in association with The Variants and Zeus Comics and Collectibles.
Although no one knows for certain, it’s rumored that Adam WarRock’s secret identity is Eugene Ahn, a former Memphis attorney, comic book fan, and longtime gamer. According to theory, Ahn quit his job after an epiphany in which he realized his happiness lie firmly rooted in the creative act. (Who could blame him? Rapping sounds like a lot more fun than litigating.) Ahn, in typical Clark Kent fashion, could not be reached for comment.
So get out your pocket protectors and tape up your eyeglasses, Adam WarRock’s nerdcore invasion takes place one night only, Sunday February 27 at Alexandre’s bar at 8 p.m. Expect the unexpected. “I treat the performance like a rock show, mix in new versions of songs and beats, sometimes engage the crowd in a sing along. It’s fun to not take the show too seriously. I’m goofy like that. I’d rather a performance be sloppy and fun than precisely perfect and sort of stale.”
Not a rap fan? No worries. “Even if you’re not, there’s plenty of other geeky and positive stuff to soak in. But if you are a rap fan, then you’ll definitely appreciate the beats and the rhymes.”
