Dead birds update: Fish kills, crabs and animal deaths linked to magnetic, field?
Everyone is weighing in on the dead birds, fish kills, crabs and animal deaths that have plagued the world. What seemed to begin in Arkansas has spread to Brazil and Sweden. Mass animal deaths are not unusual and the world has dealt with extreme cold, but now another theory has been proposed to the mystery which has left scientist and lay person puzzled: the shift in the Earth’s magnetic field.

Approximately 40,000 ‘devil crabs’ or velvet swimming crabs were found in England while millions of fish were found dead in Maryland. The latest theory is that birds, which use the magnetic fields for navigation, may have been thrown off course due to the magnetic shift. An article by Catherine Brahic called “Birds can ‘see’ the Earth’s magnetic field has caused some to speculate that there may be a plausible reason behind the massive amount of dead birds showing up around the world. A National Geographic article titled “Do Birds Use Magnetic Field to Plan Migration Routes” brings more to the topic as well.
Though the magnetic field theory makes sense for birds it seems a bit of a stretch to explain the recent fish kills. However, in an Ask Nature article it was learned that fish respond to magnetic fields. In the article “Fish responds to magnetic fields: rainbow trout” it was stated,
“In 1997, the first known magnetoreceptors — directly linking magnetite to neural connections and activity — were found in vertebrates. A team of zoologists from Auckland University, led by Dr. Michael Walker, had been studying this mysterious sense in trout, and knew that a region of its skull contained magnetite.
“Recording neural activity from that region, they discovered that a specific subgroup of nerve fibers within a branch of the trigeminal cranial nerve called the ros V nerve fired in response to changes in the surrounding magnetic field. They also found magnetite in a tissue layer directly beneath the trout’s olfactory (smell) organs. When they injected a colored dye into the ros V nerve’s newly exposed magnetosensitive fibers, the dye revealed that the fibers terminated and ramified all around the magnetite-containing cells within the trout’s olfactory tissue.” (Shuker 2001:46)
Is it possible that the shift in the magnetic field is responsible for the recent mass animal deaths?
