With spring quickly approaching, the next holiday that screams for decorations is St. Patrick’s Day. It is probably one of the best scheduled reasons to have fun – whether you are lucky enough to be Irish or not. So, get started to make it as easy as possible to prepare for an unforgettable March 17 get together.
The most obvious decorating tool for this holiday is oddly, but obviously, a color – Kelly green. It isn’t necessary for the decorations to be adorned with four-leaf clovers or leprechauns. An obvious money saver is if the décor is green it can be used again and again throughout the year. Just choose home items of your liking that happen to remind you of Ireland – table linens, dishes and glassware and accessories like pillows, vases and flowers.
Welcome visitors at the front door with a grapevine wreath or a large basket of flowers on the steps. Work with green hydrangeas, a mix of bells of Ireland, euphorbias, green tulips and lady’s mantle.
Decorators with a green thumb might be ambitious enough to grow their own St. Patrick’s Day decorations. Shamrocks are easy to grow and are an obvious but fun part of the party.
Pick up “enough” shamrock bulbs, oxalis deppei, in a local nursery or gardening section. Plant the bulbs in well-drained peat-based potting soil. Keep at normal room temperature but grow in bright light. Water the bulbs regularly but allow the soil to almost dry between waterings and fertilize once a month. To top off the project, tie a large green ribbon around the pot. If there is time, paint the shamrock’s new potted home in Kelly green to add that special touch.
If time permits, scout out yard sales and flea markets for unique, inexpensive green decorations. Stemware doesn’t have to match – variety can make the table more visually interesting for guests. For hostesses who are in a hurry – having waited until the last minute to decorate – visit favorite shops for glasses in green or white, serving dishes with interesting designs in spring colors and textured throw pillows for couches and chairs.
Don’t forget the ambiance – Irish music softly piping in the background will make the celebration perfect and complete.
Happy St. Patty’s Day and don’t forget to enjoy yourself at the party!
