Deer whistles are acoustical, ultra-sonic car accessories that one can place on the front of any vehicle to curtail striking deer along the highway. Deer whistles work because deer sentinel whistle a warning to others when something odd is coming. Deer then stop and look around; allowing your vehicle time to pass safely along the highway.
A 2-year, Modoc County (Calif) Department of Transportation study on the effectiveness of deer whistles can be found at http://www.deerwhistle.com/Test%20results.pdf
The cover photo shows a deer recognizing my car whistle and stopping in its track to investigate further as I drove by.
As a young man, I did not worry about deer whistles and such until a herd of 16 pounced down right in front of my car. Two deer horns slid up the hood shattering my front window and fortunately for me continued over the top of my small Ford Aspire. The airbags did not eject or this car would have been totaled according to my insurance agent at the time in Montana. All the white plastic body work and windows needed to be replaced and $1700 was spent repairing this family car.
Can a $3 to $6 device on a car prevent $1700 car repairs and not to mention the trauma associated with that event?
After this 1993 scary event, the author seriously started investigating ways to curtail or maybe prevents future highway wildlife encounters to keep my family safe.
Deer population nation-wide are expanding and everyone in Oregon knows someone who has struck a deer on the highway. Some are killed by this encounter.
One can get “Deer Whistles” at auto parts stores, sporting good stores and even Wal-Mart.
Most people glue, epoxy or screw the two plastic whistles on the front of the hood of their vehicles where auto mechanics or kid’s bouncing basketball shatter them instantaneously. Placing deer whistles inside the front grill hidden from obvious bumping is a very good investment. Plus, periodically clean out your bug kill inside these whistles monthly –if you want them to work for you – especially at dusk.
Over the decades, the author has observed moose are the only big highway animal that does NOT stop and look around. Moose are not herd animals and are not influenced by anything humans can create.
However, Bison, wild horses, pronghorn antelope, most cows, deer, Mt.Sheep and bears hear that strange whistle coming from your car up to a quarter mile away and stop to investigate; allowing one time to drive away safely.

Safe sane driving practices always protect people and even deer whistles will not protect you in every circumstance. For example, a coyote was chasing a buck up a hill and he didn’t slow down as he broadsided and dented my vehicle. It is the head on collisions that kill people.
Spring is coming and I want my reader to be safe out there exploring their Great outdoors and deer whistles do help!
