We are at the end of February and at Sport&Health Crystal-Gateway in Arlington I am starting to see some of the new-be’s(New Years Resolution) less and less and starting to see some different new-be’s starting now. Here are some of the reasons that some are quitting and some are just starting:
- Work Schedule
- Family Responsibilities
- Lack of Training Experience
- Lack of Support from Family or Friends
- Lack of Progress/Failure to Achieve Goals
The Centers for Disease Control recommend baseline fitness levels for adults should perform 2.5 hours of aerobic activity during the week and perform strength training exercises at least two days a week.
Injury, or lack of time, may interfere with an individual adhering to these minimum exercise guideline. Some individuals will implement an exercise routine and initially train too long or perfoming activities that are too intense for their current physical condition, injuries may also occur creating a gap in training. The time off from activity affects motivation and causes many individuals to fail to resume their exercise routine.
Better Training Habits
The first step is to have a specific time to exercise. Those who exercise in the morning will adhere to their program longer than those who exercise at lunch or in the evening hours.
Any amount of activity is better than no activity. Start with a short warm up and then engage in your activitiy whether it be aerobic or strength training. As you develop a routinue you may be able to extend the time for either or both. As little as 10 minutes can be beneficial.
A training partner is not necessary but makes each person responsibile. This and family support are positive directions to achieving you fitness goals.
Listen to your body. If you are an untrained individual you may experience some muscle soreness and/or fatigue. This is what you body needs to change. Muscle soreness will resove in a few days while pain is the result of an injury. Addressing an injury early on with help will hasten recovery and the return of the individual to their fitness program.
At Sport&Health Crystal-Gateway we have a SmartStart Program (professional advice and/or supervision from a personal trainer) which is a free service that is offered to new members to help give them a jump start on their fitness program. “Definite plans get definite results. Indefinite plans do not get indefinte results they typically get no results.”
