The 2nd Annual Dixie Derby Bootcamp in Huntsville, AL successfully completed the first day of the three-day training program Wednesday, January 26th with fourteen new recruits in attendance. Each new recruit was fitted for proper safety equipment, taught the basics of skating form, and practiced techniques for falling safely, starting and stopping by veteran skater training crew Asian Invasion, Cakeface Killa, and M’Shell O’Bomb-HER.
In addition to the skating skills taught for incoming Dixie Derby trainees, new 2011 Bootcamp sponsor SportsMED was on site offering tips and insights into injury prevention, proper hydration, and derby-specific related information such as the identification and proper care of concussions and other common gameplay injuries.
“SportsMED serves as sports medicine consultants and practitioners for many professional, amateur, college, high school and middle school athletic organizations. Among these are the Huntsville Stars, the UAH Chargers, and leagues and organizations such as soccer, gymnastics, swimming, dance and more. SportsMED is proud to include the Dixie Derby Girls to this list of athletes. I would like to thank all the women with the Dixie Derby Girls for allowing SportsMED to participate in Bootcamp this year. I wish you all the best of luck this season.” –Ben Macklin, SportsMED
The primary purpose of the Dixie Derby Girls Roller Derby Boot Camp is to train and recruit new team members, giving very specialized training and personal coaching. Although the Dixie Derby Girls accept new recruits all year long, ladies 19 & older interested in joining the league receive the best training during this new recruit boot camp than any other time of the year.
The final two days of bootcamp will take place on January 28th and 30th from 5pm-7pm at the Dixie Derby practice facility, Roller Time Skate Center (707 Arcadia Circle Huntsville). Late registrations will be accepted into the training program.
At the end of the Boot Camp week, skaters will be tested on ability to meet the WFTDA Minimum Skills Requirements. Those who achieve all these skills will be ready for placement on a DDG team (Raging Rocket All-Stars or Rocket City Rollers).
All girls who dedicate themselves to developing the skills they’ll need to play, will be accepted into the league as a part of our “Freshmeat” program; even if they are not yet ready for team placement.
