Humans for thousands of years thought the earth was flat. In fact, it wasn’t until the late 1400’s that they figured out otherwise. We all heard in our history classes growing up that Christopher Columbus took three ships full of criminals to explore a “New World”. These superstitious explorers actually thought they might reach the edge of the world and fall into some deep abyss. If they had just been students of the Bible they might have run across the passage in the book of the prophet Isaiah where it states, “God sits above the circle of the earth. The people below seem like grasshoppers to him! He spreads out the heavens like a curtain and makes his tent from them.”
How could Isaiah write about the “circle of the earth” in 700 BC if God did not inspire him to write that? If everyone else in the world thought the world was flat, why would Isaiah use the word “circle”?
700 years after Isaiah’s revelation of the earth being a globe, the Gospel writer Luke seems to pick up on it.
Luke 17:30–Yes, it will be ‘business as usual’ right up to the day when the Son of Man is revealed. On that day a person out on the deck of a roof must not go down into the house to pack. A person out in the field must not return home. 32 Remember what happened to Lot’s wife! 33 If you cling to your life, you will lose it, and if you let your life go, you will save it. 34That night two people will be asleep in one bed; one will be taken, the other left.
It is obvious from the text that Luke is talking about the return of Jesus Christ, which is one event that will take place in a flash.
1 Corinthians 15:51–We will not all die, but we will all be transformed! 52 It will happen in a moment, in the blink of an eye, when the last trumpet is blown.
So, if Christ’s return happens “in a moment, in the blink of an eye”, how could Luke say that it will happen both during the day and during the night? Well, one side of the planet will be day and one side will be night. How could Luke know that without the guidance of the Holy Spirit of God?
Job was written about 2000 BC and the book makes an amazing scientific claim!
Job 26:7–God stretches the northern sky over empty space and hangs the earth on nothing.
Keep in mind that the whole pagan world at that time believed the world was resting on the back of an elephant that was riding on the back of a turtle! So, for Job to make this claim that the earth was suspended in empty space was against everything the people at that time believed. This proves to me that God truly inspired the writers of the Bible or they would have included the belief systems of their day into their books.
The Old Testament of the Bible also reveals truths concerning the weather patterns and evaporation cycles.
Ecclesiastes 11:3–If clouds are full of water, they pour rain on the earth.
How could Solomon, the writer of Ecclesiastes, know a scientific fact like that in 935 BC? He also states that most clouds are formed from the evaporation of the oceans.
Ecclesiastes 1:7–All streams flow into the sea, yet the sea is never full. To the place the streams come from, there they return again.
Have you ever wondered how water, which is heavier than air, can stay suspended in air for long periods of time? Water from the oceans and lakes evaporates and rises thousands of feet into the air and remains in the clouds until they are heavy enough to release the water. Amazingly, the Bible told us about this cycle thousands of years ago.
Job 36:27–He draws up the water vapor and then distills it into rain. 28 The rain pours down from the clouds, and everyone benefits.
Solomon also had revelation knowledge of the wind patterns.
Ecclesiastes 1:6–The wind blows to the south and turns to the north; around and round it goes, ever returning on its course.
How could Solomon know that the winds of our planet blow in a circular pattern three thousand years ago?
I believe that the scientific knowledge of these Biblical writers proves that God had to inspire their writings. Nothing else can explain how men writing thousands of years ago could know this information. Stay tuned for part three of using science from the Bible to prove the existence of God!
