Synopsis ~ Filmed in 2005, while Velvet Revolver was touring in support of their best selling/Grammy Award-winning debut Contraband, Live in Houston features the original line-up of vocalist Scott Weiland, lead guitarist Slash, bassist/vocalist Duff McKagan, drummer Matt Sorum, and rhythm guitarist Dave Kushner.
Showcasing rock’s elite bringing the heat on hits like “Slither” and “Fall To Pieces” before the raucous, riotous Texas crowd, this 78-minute rock fest also treats fans to tracks from each member’s background, including Guns ‘N’ Roses “It’s So Easy” and “Used To Love Her,” and Stone Temple Pilots’ “Sex Type Thing,” and “Crackerman.” Additionally, interview footage with each of the members on the band’s formation is spliced into the mix, making Live in Houston the ultimate Velvet Revolver experience.

Gritty guitar licks and grungy rock pulsates and powers this 78 minute set as Velvet Revolver takes Houston squarely by the horns in promotion of their debut album Contraband, and though unfortunately for fans the entirety of the performance doesn’t make it to the disc, what is included makes for a wonderful blending of light and lyrics.
Both the band itself and their set list is a melting pot of by-gone Guns-N-Roses and Stone Temple Pilots hits – the band being comprised of Stone Temple Pilots singer Scott Weiland standing in the spot left vacant by Axl Rose while Slash, Duff McKagan, Matt Sorum and Dave Kushner offer a brilliant backdrop for his belting – smartly sneaking in hits like It’s So Easy, Crackerman, and Sex Type Thing – from the dually independent bands heydays – to support the newly forged Velvet Revolver’s fledgling tracks.
No special features are included, but the factoids and interview footage sequenced in between the songs is just as enjoyable and more than likely contains any information granted to an extras feature.
So if rock-n-roll soul mixed with blues-like ballads really speak to your palette, then Velvet Revolver: Live in Houston should sink a bold shot straight into your alternative spot.
