Cows are sacred to the Hindi Religion, and therefore, one will never have the opportunity to eat beef in India. Even if you happen upon a McDonald’s or other fast food joint, which will more than likely only happen in Mumbai, don’t expect to order a Big Mac, you’ll be looking at a menu of Veggie Burgers and Chicken Sandwiches with your fries.
The safest route when eating in India, is to be a vegetarian, like the majority of the country. However, if this seems impossible, it is recommended to only eat meat in the coldest areas of India, located in the Himalayan Mountain Range. This is important because refrigeration is hard to come by, in the Himalayas, one can safely assume their meat has been kept at an appropriate temperature.
It is also important to be aware that in many Indian towns, such as Pushkar in Rajasthan, it is actually illegal to not only eat beef, but to eat any type of meat.
Many omnivores believe that they will have serious problems eating in India, but rest assured, Indian food tends to be so delicious, you may find yourself not missing meat at all!
