People eat because they are hungry. People eat because they enjoy food. People eat as a hobby. People eat as an activity. What is your relationship with food doing to your life?
If your relationship with food and eating is creating issues, we need to work on those issues. The “issues” usually affect weight and create long term struggles with weight and self esteem. These issues can destroy your happiness in so many ways. But, what if you try and can’t lose weight? I dislike it when people look down at those who struggle and have the attitude that if they would only stop eating so much, or only exerise more, they wouldn’t have the problem! Those people are both judgemental and unaware that the answer is not that simple. If it were, there would not be so many people (including children) who are way over what we would call healthy or comfortable.
I have a different way of looking at the weight issue. If you have a weight issue and diets just don’t work, and you have tried everything, it is far beyond a weight problem, it is an addiction. An addiction to food is something you can’t control and it produces pain. An addiction is also caused by pain. Don’t run because the word addiction is not acceptable to you. It will make sense if you are willing to look into it being a possibility that this may be your problem. You have nothing to lose but weight, so keep an open mind.
Many people have painful histories. Childhoods that were dysfunctional, little or no direction in life, no answers on how to create a happy life, and one or more bad relationships. For whatever reason, the details aren’t as important as the fact that you have painful things in your past that you have stuffed inside. The misconception of thinking that you are past it and moved on shows in your weight. Your problem with eating tells you you have not put it behind you. You have to deal with those things, not ignore or hide them, no matter how long ago they happened. Food should not be the main focus with your weight problem, it should be dealing with your pain.
Emotional eating is beyond a break-up and finishing off a container of ice cream once in a while. It is more than having one too many desserts on a bad day. It means that every time you hurt, or every time something triggers your memories of someone or something that was painful to you, you look for a bandaid, a quick way to make the pain go away.
Addictions do just that. Unfortunately a food addiction is a more acceptable way to deal with pain than alcohal or drugs. It is an addiction that is legal, and an addiction that is insidious. If you have had a lot of stress and/or pain in your past, you might want to look into emotional eating as a cause of your weight issue. When emotional eating is involved, your treatment plan for losing weight is not the same as someone who can jump into an exercise class or just watch what they eat.
There are classes starting in the Livonia/Northville area. These classes have proven to give hope to those who have tried everything. It is hope that the connection between your feelings and obsession to eat could be keeping you stuck. It is much different and you must take a different approach.
