A day, an age, an eon, an era, an epoch…
Are we at the end of the world, the end of the age or at the dawning of a new day?
The phrase “New Age” has gained some bad press at the hands of the fearful, the inconscient and conspiracy theorists proclaiming it as nothing more than an ominous foreboding of the end of the world. At the very least, it is purported by some to be part of a diabolical plot intended to subvert the unwary from the “true faith.”
The term “Apocalypse” has also been pin-holed into some kind of fatalistic unfolding of cataclysmic events preceding the destruction of the earth. Unfortunately, many have bought into a fallacy which views it primarily as a synonym for doomsday i.e. Armageddon.
If we take a closer look at the etymology of the word Apocalypse, however, it becomes clear that the word itself does not imply anything of the sort, but simply means to “unveil” or “reveal,” as in a revelation.
One could erroneously conclude that because the Biblical book of Revelation seems to talk about eschatological events, that this somehow provides the true meaning of Apocalypse, but they would be missing the very Essence of Truth contained in this enigmatic book of signs and symbols.
Instead, perhaps we should consider asking, “What is it that is actually being revealed and what is actually coming to an end?”
Where Jesus has been misunderstood to be referencing the “end of the world,” he was clearly talking about the end of an age (aion), not the end of the world (cosmos). Because of the relationship between the words “world” (pertaining to the physical universe) and “age” (pertaining to time or duration), however, they were sometimes used interchangeably, albeit inaccurately, by the translators. This misunderstanding alone has created much confusion within religious circles.
For some, the debate still continues concerning whether or not creation took place in a literal twenty-four hour day or whether or not those days, like the ages, were periods of “unknown duration.” We have it on good authority, however, in the Bible itself, that “with the Lord, a day is as a thousand years and a thousand years is as a day.”
Whether literal or symbolic, it should be evident that metaphorical language like this is used throughout the Scriptures, let alone, a book as cryptic as the book of Revelation. Therefore, any Biblical terminology related to the element of time requires further contextual investigation.
This includes phrases like “The Day of the Lord” or “The Lord’s Day.” More than once these terms speak either of an unknown period of time or a Timeless Reality that exists beyond the boundaries of mortality. That being said, to comprehend an idea which transcends our linear concept of time requires a receiver attuned to the frequency of that dimension.
“Time is the horizontal dimension of life, the surface layer of reality. Then there is the vertical dimension of depth, accessible to you only through the portal of the Present Moment.” Eckhart Tolle in A New Earth.
In like manner, the “kingdom of God” was revealed by Christ as a Present Reality “within us.” Not something reserved for a place or time in the distant future, but an Experiential Reality to be expressed NOW “IN earth AS it is IN heaven.”
As the well-known Christian mystic Thomas Merton asserts in his book, The New Man, “The new world which is called the Kingdom of God, the world in which God reigns IN man by His Divine Spirit, the world of the Second Adam IS, in fact, the Eon of the resurrection–the New Age that begins to dawn with the rising of Christ from the dead, which reaches out to touch, with the pure spiritual light of that dawning, each soul newly incorporated into the Risen Christ.“
It should not be too big a stretch to conclude that if we are “in the world, but not of the world,” because we are “strangers and sojourners on the earth,” that our True Existence is in a realm not of this age. An Infinite Domain that exists beyond the limitations of time and space.
Therefore, this epoch of humanity’s transitory existence is eclipsed by the realization of “Christ in you the hope of glory,” as the “Day Star arises in our hearts.” It is not something future, but a Present Awareness of Our True Identity which radiates the Light of Endless Life from the very core of Our Being.
It is truly the end of “your” world when, as a “partaker of the Divine Nature,” God is fully revealed IN, THROUGH and AS You. “For AS HE IS, so ARE WE in this world.“
The Scriptures declare that, “The Glory of the Lord shall cover the earth as the waters cover the sea.” That is because, the earthly nature is immersed by the Spirit-Water of Eternal Life springing up from the depths within us and encompassing the totality of our Being.
“Arise, shine; for your light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon you. For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the LORD shall arise upon you, and his glory shall be seen upon you.” – Isaiah 60:1-2
