REVIEWING THE NEWS: Sports mega-network merely dribbles out coverage of blockbuster Knicks-Nuggets NBA trade for superstar Carmelo Anthony.
By Kenny Herzog
Explain to me how a network that has three properties dedicated to 24-7 sports news and highlights, after breathlessly reporting on a story for weeks around the clock, fails to break into previously scheduled airtime for in-depth coverage of said story’s actual resolution.
Having heard via text message about ex-Denver Nuggets superstar Carmelo Anthony coming home to New York via a midnight trade to the Knicks, I immediately flipped to ESPN’s flagship show SportsCenter. It was airing at the time, and did indicate on its left-screen menu that info on the deal would be coming soon, but then cut to a pre-taped edition of NFL Live, despite football being in its offseason.
After flipping manically one channel up to ESPN2, I was dismayed to see yet another already-broadcast half-hour of roundtable chat-fest Sportsnation, which was actually in the midst of a speculative segment from earlier in the day regarding Anthony’s status. Embarrassing. Insult to news-starved injury, the company’s second primary sister station, ESPN News, was re-cycling through its endlessly looping Highlight Express, with no real-time interruption regarding an NBA transaction that is one of sports’ biggest, period, in several years, a massive reinvigorating of the sport’s cornerstrone franchise and a boon to the ongoing saga of Miam’s Lebron James-Dwayne Wade-fueled efforts to dominate the Eastern Conference. But nothing across the various televised feeds from national cable’s allegedly premier competitive-athletics home. Nonsense.
Then again, maybe I’m just bitter because I moved to Maryland from NYC two days before the trade and will miss out on Melo Mania first-hand. Still, if you’re ESPN, and you’ve been making basketball fans worldwide feel invested in the perennial All-Star’s ongoing saga with endless pre-packaged hype, then at least demonstrate the resourcefulness and journalistic instintcs to satiate us once we’re hooked and there’s a real story to report.
