In 2008, The International Film Channel premiered a wonderful coming of age story. Fighter is the story of Aicha, a young Turkish girl in France who has one undying passion, kung fu. But her parents want her to focus only on school and becoming a doctor like her older brother. Kung fu is not something a young lady should be involved in her parents believe.
Still Aicha will not give up her dream. She secretly joins a kung fu school and has to first prove her worth to even join. Her first day she is to spar against Emil; who reluctantly fights her, but will later not only become her friend, but potential love intrest.
Aicha’s actions do not go without consequences. Her brother is attacked by his fiance’s brother and friends, and Aicha successfully defends him. But this puts her family in a bad light with her future sister-in-law’s family, and causes her father a profitable job. And one of the men involved, Omar, in her brother’s attack is – to her family, a future husband for their daughter.
Aicha’s feelings for Emil will not be tolerated. And she continues to bring shame to her family. But Aicha will not quit. And with hard work and determination, she works her way to a kung fu tournament where she will utlimately have to spar Emil and Omar.
Fighter is a nice blend of a young woman coming of age. Clash of cultures; and kung fu teachings and actions all rolled into one. Near the middle the movie slows down, but you will not lose intrest. And there are plenty of plot twists that will make it worth your time.
