Elizabeth Taylor has passed away at the age of 79 and it’s clear the world has lost one of its brightest stars. Taylor’s amazing film career thrust her into the public eye where she seemed to thrive. Her infamous violet eyes and unique beauty often left men tripping over her. She was also known as a true romantic and her entanglements with a number of suitors had the world counting how many husbands she had over the years. Her life was material for Jeopardy questions in terms of both the personal headlines she generated and her illustrious film career.
Apart from the romance, the acting talent and those sensational violet eyes of hers, Taylor was one of the most generous benefactors in the entertainment industry. She often donated to charitable causes and did enormous work for those afflicted with HIV/AIDS. The lady gave so much of herself and often did so quietly behind the scenes. She had an enormous impact on bringing awareness about HIV/AIDS into the public eye and continued to give until the end.
US Magazine did one of the last interviews with Taylor. They have reposted the piece today.
Soap fans of course recall her General Hospital connection. The Grande Dame initiated the role of Helena Cassadine in 1981. Jamey Giddens at DC explains how Elizabeth managed a guest role during the peak of GH’s popularity:
“In 1981, Taylor contacted the brass at the ABC Daytime soap opera General Hospital, demanding to know when her favorite couple, Luke Spencer (Tony Geary) and Laura Vining Webber Baldwin (Genie Francis) would finally be married. According to then-head writer Thom Racina—who had no plans to marry the popular couple at the time— he told Taylor he would write a wedding for Luke and Laura if she appeared on the soap. Helena Cassadine was born and Luke and Laura’s wedding went on to be the most-watched hour in daytime television history.”
Taylor also appeared on All My Children, once in 1983 as a Board Member at the Chateau and again in 1984 when she was cast as a maid at the Goal Post Restaurant.
Her contributions to the entertainment industry and to humanity were unpararelled and the memories she’s left behind legendary. Elizabeth Taylor leaves an indelible mark on the world in the wake of her death and she will never be forgotten for so many reasons. Rest in peace Elizabeth.
