Live on PPV tonight is the WBF heavyweight title fight between Evander Holyfield and Sherman Williams. Unfortunately, many boxing critics look upon this fight with sympathy rather than excitement or interest. The 48 yr old Evander Holyfield has heard the retirement calls for the last decade. However, Evander doesn’t believe it’s time to hang up the gloves. In his final pre-fight interviews, Holyfield says tonight’s fight is a steppingstone to accomplishing his ultimate goal of bringing back the heavyweight titles to America.
“My plan is to get all [the belts]. I just know there should be one champ. There’s no sense in four or five people walking around saying they’re the champ at the same time.” Holyfield, NY post
“None of the top-ranked heavyweights are American. My goal is to bring the belts back to America. It’s about redemption in America.” Holyfield, Boxingscene.com
In my opinion, if Evander’s not seriously endangering his health, then let him keep fighting. 40 is the new 30 and exercise science has greatly aided in pushing the human limitations even further.
As for tonight’s PPV, I predict Evander wins by decision. Holyfield will outwork Sherman “Tank” Williams, limit his mistakes and nullify Tank’s offense. Evander will do enough to win the fight on points. However, if Evander loses this fight, he can close the door on the dreams of bringing back the titles to America. The only chance he has at accomplishing this goal is to keep winning and forcing one of the current champions (Klitschkos or Haye) to fight him.
