Flat Top Grill downtown Naperville has Asian inspiration in decoration as well as a unique flavor options. It’s a create-your-own-stirfry restaurant in the heart of downtown. The service starts with a simple greeting for a server and names being put on wooden sticks (the funnier, the better). Then you take a contraption holding a couple bowls up to the buffet-style line and start filling your large bowl with pasta, vegetables and sauces. There are mini white cups to try out the sauce combinations (definitely try before dumping Vindahoo or horseradish tofu over the food). There are several spicy options as well as vegetarian, vegan, and other health cautious sauces. It is a great way to try out different styles of eating – including “fake chicken” or “fake beef” made from veggies. After adding all the items to the large bowl, the end of the line has meats to put in the smaller bowl.
For your safety, the meat is cooked separately (1st) before being added to the rest of the stirfry. Right before you leave your concoction with the cooks, there is a collection of colorful sticks to customize your meal. Highly recommended is the blue stick for the Roti Pratta bread. It is divine, but also eat the bread in moderation because it is terrible for you. Patrons are allowed to change the stirfry into soups: vegetable broth or hot and sour broth. Another option is Mooshoo wraps to make burrito like items (you will end up with a few “burritos,” not just one). To have your food cooked in a wok instead of the grill, the white stick can be used. This is ideal for people with allergies. Everything from peanuts to shrimp to dairy is put on the grill. There are several gluten-free options as well.
While you sit and relax, the food cooks at the grill, which is promptly brought to you piping hot when it is finished. It is almost always great. However, if you didn’t make it taste good, they are gracious enough to let you try again.
There are two options for stirfry: one bowl or unlimited. If you decided that one bowl would be sufficient, you are able to take home your leftovers. If you decide that you would like to make additional trips up to the food line, you pay extra and to take home leftovers there would be an additional charge. It makes sense, because if you make unlimited, you can make a meal to go for under $5 more (which is less than coming back for it). There are price breaks for students with ID and also cheaper lunch prices. Lastly, weekend mornings have create-your-own breakfast with omelets, scrambles, pancakes with fruit, veggies, and sweets.
Absolutely visit this restaurant. It’s great to come with friends and try the different types of food each creates!
