Hattiesburg, MS. –
It has been reported that former Kentucky Wildcat player Darnell Dodson will transfer to Southern Miss to play for head coach Larry Eustachy and the Golden Eagles. Dodson, a 6′-7″ slashing guard / forward can play the 2-guard or the small-forward positions and looks to add some more fire-power to a USM program that appears to be taking steps to be an elite program in Conference USA.
Darnell Dodson is originally from Greenbelt, MD., where he guided his Eleanor Roosevelt High School team to back-to-back Maryland Class 4A State Final Four appearances. He averaged 29.1 points, 11 rebounds and 2.6 steals in his senior season and 18 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists in his junior season. Darnell is also the school’s all-time scoring leader with 1,262 points.
Dodson then played his freshman season at Miami Dade Community College leading the Sharks to a conference championship along with a 26-2 record. He averaged 15.7 points and 5.2 rebounds during the year which made him a 1st team all-conference selection for the 2008-2009 campaign. That caliber of play brought the high profile John Calipari calling who was to take over in his first year at the helm of the Kentucky program.
In the 2009-2010 season, Dodson averaged 6.0 points and 2.5 rebounds in 35 games where he garnered 7 starts. Kentucky had such a talented team that he was overlooked for other star players throughout the year. Darnell then was dismissed from the team for off-court reasons and academic eneligibilites after the 2010 spring semester. What was next for his future people might ask?
The answer is to transfer to the University of Southern Mississippi and play for coach Larry Eustachy. Eustachy, himself, has bounced back from personal issues that affected his life and profession by coming to USM to take over the program in 2004. He has taken on troubled players in the past and has helped this year’s star senior forward Gary Flowers who had his issues in the past when he began his career at Oklahoma.
Darnell Dodson will have to sit out the spring and fall semesters due to the transfer, but will be allowed to practice with the Golden Eagles during that period. He will be an exciting addition to the program for the 2012 basketball season where he will be allowed to play for the conference portion of the schedule.
Dodson’s new team, Southern Miss (14-4, 3-2) will hoop it up later today at 2 p.m. CST against the SMU Mustangs (10-8, 1-3) at the Moody Coliseum in Dallas, TX.
