Foster Parents; Fostering is?
Part 2 of 2
We are giving you one positive view into fostering, the children caught in the Foster Care System are the positive. However, chidlren are different today than they were years ago. We had just made a statement in part 1 of this series that you need to think about. Surviving a hurricane is not impossible although knowing it is coming and being prepared for it is always better.
We are not against fostering, we simply believe that it is imperative that foster parents receive honest training, that they are adequately equipped to foster prior to walking into what is a harshly realistic world. To do anything else is cruel and does not offer them the honor and respect they deserve.
Trainers as well as our foster parents need take the rose-colored glasses off and realize that
“children today are equal to the adults of yesterday”.
What do we mean by that; a majority of the children today are street wise, armed to accuse in a heartbeat, taught by their peers standing ready to ruin your life. Children are not just angry at being in the system they act out the system. There is distinct possibility that this innocent looking little twelve-year-old today is no playing with dolls anymore but participating in things children were not even aware of 20 years ago. Times have changed. It is time for MAPP training to change also, altered to train in reality not fantasy.
Our suggestion; attend a Foster Parents Association meeting, (find yours NFPA/link below) talk to a few senior foster parents, those who have been foster parents for a while, seasoned foster care providers who are there to obtain their renewal hours. Ask them if children have changed? Ask them about fostering 10 years ago or even 5 years ago You will hear and see a different picture emerge than presented today in the foster training. A time long ago in an idealistic world of fostering, yes things have drastically changed. Be a foster parent with eyes opened, know the facts. Come to nfpcar we will teach you methods to best protect yourself and your family.
Fact; children need your help, however enter these gates knowing the reality of what you are going into.

People who live in a glass house should have glass coverage. Never doubt it is not if an allegation will hit you, but when an allegation will hit, be as ready for it that you can be.
